Default block front grill with sheet metal on 64 nova?

I have seen many cars do this at the track, what is the reason? does it make the air go around the car instead of through it for better aero dynamics?
I have been thinking about doing this to my Nova, what do you all think? it has a lift off front clip and like it is, the back of the hood wants to lift off the car from so much air getting under there.

you're on the right track, a lot of cars use plexiglass but it's the same concept. Reduces front end lift on the top end and will give you some mph as well. If you're carbed the jetting could change from the lack of turbulence under the hood, and give you some hp and a more consistent car. Depends on your air cleaner setup, height of the cowl, etc.

Keep in mind if you choose to block the grille the car will likely run warmer as well from the lack of air. A ten second car might not need this as much as say an 8 second car.

THanks guys, it is a Ls1 with a truck intake and a ram air setup going to the front grill. I will put plexi glass and just make a hole for the 6 inch to 4 inch coupling to mount in it.
I get a lot of lift on the front cap so i hope to find some mph, i should be going more then 125 with 400 rwhp through a th350 on a 2600lb race wieght. I was hoping for more like 128.

I know when i took the front facing scoop off and put on a 6 " cowl scoop i went from 121 to 125 with no other changes.
I am dropping the exhaust for friday night and might just put the plexi glass in the grill. I can drop the exhaust at the track after a couple of passes to see what does what.
