Default UGHH! TH400 Safety Debate!

I'm in the process of getting my TH400 built for my Trans Am. My crew is insisting I go with the JW Ultra Bell and just a blanket.

The trans shop insists that I don't need an Ultra Bell and I should go with the CSR shield. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CSI-832/

My trans guy also is telling me that if I go with the Ultra Bell, I will still need to cover the trans with something because of the brake; and that the blanket will be too thick! He also says that the TCI shield won't fit.

I don't know what the hell I should be going with at the moment.

For those needing more information, this is for a nitrous car that will go bottom 9s on a decent shot. 3500# car.

We use the Ultra Bell and blanket on all our cars. I dont like the CSR sheild for this application.

PM JL-ws6.

Safety is defintly a concern, but there is a big diff if this car see ANY street time or if is trailer and raced at track only and I did not see anything mentioned either way.

I had concidered and am thinking about a TH-400/4L80e swap but due to funds I am rocking the T-56.

BUT when I found was with a Blanket, it shot the temp up and I still drive the car a lot on the streets and that was not good for the trans. The trans would have been a RMVB and T-brake set up. I was basically looking at a shield at minimum.

^ I'll def let the experts chime in but what I had read and discussed was since the blanket is strapped to the trans, it makes it harder to disapate heat and could hurt the trans in the long run. I would only run the Th400 with a T brake so it was required IMO for safety.

I do not recall if you got a SFI legal case would help avoid that requirement but that was the only othe thing that I can think of.

There's no SFI legal case for the TH400 that I know of, just the bellhousing. You still need something covering the rest of the trans.

The ultra bell and blanket will do the job, I don't like the blanket because they never seem to stay put, straps are always something you're messing with, etc.

I ran a CSR shield for a couple seasons. It's a TIGHT fit, but it does fit. The worst part is getting to the tranny to block bolts. I found, the easiest way to get to them, was I lowered the motor (I had a motor plate in the car that did not hang on the frame rails, made this an easy deal) and then I could easily get to the bolts. I'd reccommend, that if you are going to take the CSR route, to put a motor plate in, so you can lower the motor easily to get to everything.

If that's not an option, then I'd take the JW ultra bell and blanket route. Just make sure you have a big enough cooler on the tranny to take care of the heat. Probably best to run a big cooler with a fan on it.

That's another issue I have, the fact that there ISN'T an SFI case for a Th400. I can't believe after all these years that noone's made one yet. Glide there's a couple available now, why there isn't one for a TH400, I have NO idea.

I dunno about that anymore. The 2.10 first gearset is getting more popular these days. Since the additional ratio's are becoming more and more available, I can see the use for a Th400 to increase.

I ran the CSR sheild on my Nova's TH400 last year. It fits well, but it tight as JL stated. When the trans case cracked, I upgraded it to a JW Ultra Bell and blanket. The CSR covers both bases but can be a tight squeeze...

There is no SFI approved case for a TH400. I'm sure SS has a glide in his car.

CSR is a good piece. I just dont like having to drop the motor down to pull the trans. With the blanket if you install it right it doesnt hang down and you can get the trans out quick.

If someone does make a full TH400 SFI approved aftermarket case, please post it up!
