I am thinking about cutting the cowl on my 01 Formula. It wont look right, unless I put an extended hood on. My problem is, I dont want to use a pin on hood. I want one that I can still use the hinge and latch on. Track only car, but I race by myself. Fuel cell is up front, so the hood has to go up every couple of passes. It does not need to lay on the glass like most of them do, just extend back to cover the hole.

I'm next to positive that any to the windsheild cowls for the 4th gens have to be pin on....I have a VFN 5" on my car and I can take it on and off by myself with no problem....

yeah I have an extended hood and there is no way that you would be able to have it like that, it has to be lift-off due to the cowl being so close to the winshield. vfn carries a non extended that would work for what you are trying to do.

I've been just finishing up on all of what you're trying to accomplish.
My bolt on hood was extended 8". I have twin T/B's so my windshild is notched.
I use 18" struts to keep the hood from hitting the windshild.
I incorporated the OEM hood latch mechanism into the custom front bumper support.
I also have a front mount fuel cell that I strategically placed the fuel cap in the cell so it can easily be filled between the hood catch.
Head light assemblies were removed. The hood was modified with the appearance of headlight buckets. We made custom aluminum panels to fill the space between the bumper cover and radiator with only the opening between the hood catch to fill the cell.
It was well worth all the trouble.

If I can help any further with this, then just let me know. I have many, many hours into this and I have pictures of everything.

I Apprecialte that Firehawk. That sounds like a great set up. But I was looking for something a little more 'bolt on'. Lol. But I will keep this in mind.

Just very expensive and a ton of work. I refuse to ever have a pin on hood bounce off the turf again.

Looking to do the same. Sure wish VFN would make a bolt on extended hood, one that does not go all the way to the windsheild (atleast not as far as their fully extended hood) and make the two rear fender corners separate then it would be possible.

I cut my cowl just like alot of guys do but I definately dont want a pin on hood and the standard bolt on would leave a huge gap which is what I dont want.

Firehawk, post up some pics if possible. I have the same idea you have and I know its going to be some work but worth it in the end.

anyone ever try having it open like the corvette hoods? Not sure how easy it would be, but that's an option.

well...I was speaking from a point of "ease of install", what you mentioned would prove to be quite the headache for a latching hood and not worth it from MY perspective. Now what you did looks good, damn good...but (lol, there always a but), imo thats no longer an "extended" windshield.

I have a vfn 4" sloped extended hood that Im in-process of installing and the actual cowl touches the windshiled, even if I notched like you did my cowl would be close. I went the dzus route (which is a headache in itself)and the hood cant be any more that what, 12-13lbs? I can easily see the benefit of having the hood like that and Im quite sure it would be worth it to those who choose to do so...to each his own.

I race in multiple types of classes. Not all of them allow forward facing hood scoops other then OEM "style".

With the hood up against the windshield, it doesn't allow me to have enough air to the engine.

there are a few pics floating around in this sectioon, for the 'bird you have to go fully custom or modify a camaro dzus rail kit from racecraft (I chose the latter), it will allow 4 per side and you will have to come up with something for the front and rear. good luck man and when Im finally done maybe I will post some pics up.
