guys with 4.30 gears in a s60? help
Im on my second set of 4.30 gears for the s60. First set setup by strange got unbearably loud after about 8 months and a couple thousand miles. Replaced with new gears from strange by a local guy. Were quiet during break in, now after about 20 passes, they sound the same as the old ones. WTF? is anyone else having problems with that ratio?
Car is an m6, on et drags, 430 rwhp, running 11.60's with 1.5-1.6 short times. Thanks

Its considered normal.
Has to due with not only how they are setup, but the material used in the gears. Sounds like you did some hard driving/racing and soon as you try to hit the tire, the noise does come back.
My exp is with a Moser but more or less your going to see that with most other's. The Moser set up gears were generally louder for me vs, the locally done set but after years of driving, I bearly notice it. i.e. I got over it.

This is definitely not normal gear whine. I had that with my 10 bolt and it was bearable to drive and did it all the time. This is on coasting or decel only and is unbearably loud. This is the 2nd set of gears that did it. I can't believe anybody would live with this noise on a daily driver or even weekend car.

Then its a mis install.
I have the sound deadening out of the car and you hear a whine, its noticeable but not going to make or break me.
Having a steeper gear will change pitch as the contact pattern is different. IN the end the material of the ring and pinion is king and that is what will effect noise beyond mistakes made by the installed and how the TQ factors into the sound.

So with that said. Do you think it is possible for 2 different installers to install 2 different brand gears(hoosier and us gear) with the same ratio and have the outcome be the same? Quiet for the break in, then ridiculously loud on coast after some dragstrip passes. Or is it possible that the case has issues? or something like that?

My personal experience with a racing ring gear is after some hard launches that it will change the tone/sound of that rear, and in general gets louder.
My difference was same rear, same type of gear, different ratio but the moser was really loud and annoying at the time. The local gearing install basically only heard whine when accelerating and on decel nothing which was kinda cool. After racing it, you will hear it more on the decel and coast.
I dont feel this has anything to do with the case, but at this point i would post this in the rear end section and let other chime in.

Thanks. I posted in there, but no responses. I think right now its just gonna be a fluid change and backlash/pattern check to see what is up with it. Then go from there. I was just hoping some other 4.30 users would have either some good or bad input. So I knew where to look.

I had 4.30s in my car for 600 miles. I was on my way to the track when they crossed the 550 mark. They were very quiet. I made 8 passes that weekend at a race leaving around 4 to 5k everytime. On my way home, I noticed the gears were screaming. It was so loud, that it helped me make the decision to go back to 3.54s a month later.

it happends. Mine are getting so bad I htink there binding. I need to look at them and adjust them? I think thats the best I can do?
I set them up perfect, ther not stock quite but good, after the 1st track vist then get loud, and keep getting worse. The pinion depth moves too, the pattern gets worse then I had it.

Thanks guys. Im kinda leaning toward replacing them with 4.10's. The 4.30's are the only ratio not made by spicer. The 4.10s are spicer and I don't see anyone with problems with that ratio.
Boss: How are the 3.54's for noise? have u raced with them? are they spicer gears?
Thanks
