NHRA rule for battery in the trunk/hatch?
#2
I'm not sure on the rules but I would put it in something. Road dirt and grime will destroy your battery over time. If you drive in the rain and snow then there is the water issue. I put a small garden tractor battery I am the front fender of a turbo neon and it was in terrible shape within a few weeks. Bolts were seized and broke when I had to take the battery cables loose to do some work.

Battery must be in a sealed and externally vented box if inside the passenger compartment. Only way to avoid putting it in a box is to buy/build a bulkhead seperating the hatch area from the passenger compartment. I have a rule book you can read for yourself if we ever meet up to mock up the ARB to your car.

Either create a firewall back there in the spare tire wheel well or use an NHRA certified battery box. Also if you place the battery back there you need to have a cut off switch that will stop your alternator from providing a charge to the motor as well as cut off the battery power to the vehicle.
NHRA does not care whether it's a dry battery or not. Still need to have a rear firewall or a cert battery box. You can easily make a firewall with .032 aluminum sheets back there if you have some fabrication skills. Make one out of cardboard first with enough bent edges to seal via rubber insulation and removable nuts/bolts/screws to gain access when necessary.
