Default The rediculous hunk of overpriced plastic called "the upper dash pad" Can I make one?

I have been looking for a descent priced upper dash pad for my car. They are pretty hard to find under $230. I don't have one at all, not even a busted one. I was wondering if any of you guys made your own. Pics would be nice. For a street/strip car Im not sure I want to shell out that much for a hunk of plastic when I can use that money elsewhere. I might even just lay a cover up there for a while and see how I like it. Seems like you could make one out of thin wood and cover it, but that would be on the heavy side. Anybody done this before? Thanks.

Mine busted in my old car. I had a guy in a car club I'm in epoxy it back together then he put a piece of foam on top of it then wrapped it it vinyl. It looked stock and you never have to worry about it again

Yeah if I had a busted one I would go that route but I don't even have one at all. Im trying to think what would be better than wood to cut out in the shape of it, and then glue (and maybe screw) some vinyl to it.

Aluminum or a sheet of ABS plastic would work

VFN makes a dash for Firebirds and I believe Glasstek makes one in 97-02 Camaro style dash.

The problem is that's the whole dash, not just the upper pad. Great for race car, looks cheesy in a driver tho.

not sure why a company hasnt made these aftermarket yet. if they can and price them at a price people can afford they will make a killing.

Isnt that the whole dash? I'm talking about the upper piece next to the windshield that's always busted.

Good luck finding one that price. I got one off of ebay for 180 bucks. It got shipped to my house and was cracked in half. Good stuff...

That's another reason these things suck so bad. Shipping! My local GM salvage yard said I could go look but couldn't guarantee they would be any left on the cars. They quoted me $60 for a broken one. Im gonna go look real quick and see. I may luck out but its doubtful.

Well if I have to patch one back together Im gonna most likely use fiberglass resin and mat and that stuff makes it really stiff. My windshield is out right now so I really want to get this piece in before the windshield goes in. Its so easy to put in with the windshield out. But I want something that will pretty much last forever for a garaged car.

I used the mat and resin on the back, it seems solid now.

Didn't post this originally since they aren't a sponsor but here you go. Dunno if the rules have changed but posting non-sponsor links used to be a no-no. Second one down.
