Powerglide for n/a 1/8th mile use
As the title states I want to go to a glide for my new setup. The car will weigh right at 3000 lbs. race weight. The rear gear in the car now is a 4.30 and on motor is good for 620 rwhp and plan on spraying a 200 shot in the near future. Id like some opinions from people with experience running similar setups. I really want to know if I can gear the glide for the 4.30 rearend gear or if ill have to go to a lower gear ratio and how well it will even work with what I have and/ or what Ill need to do to make it work. The car is 90% strip and the only street time it sees is for cruises and meets. Your help is much appreciated.

We are running a glide in our SS with the iron block 408. It's not making quite what you are and we don't spray it, but the glide is nice. It tamed the launch down considerably over the 4L60E. We run 4.11s out back, appx 3150#s and run a Circle D Specialties 3E (5800 stall). It's currently running 6.30s in the 1/8th at 107-108 with 1.42 60fts. The 1/8 mile trap rpm is only 6500 so we could handle more gear or nitrous, but it works well as it sits.

You want that bad boy to really rip go with a TH400. You might leave a lot on the table with the Glide. Kind of a big leap going from low to high gear. Especially if you are mainly running the 1/8th. That 430 gear should be perfect for the 1/4. But if your mainly running the 1/8th I would go to a 488. This is assuming you are running a 28 inch tire. If it is a little much you can go to a 29inch tire.

I think a glide would definitely suit your needs, but do agree on a 4.30 probably not being an optimal gear for you if it is an 1/8 mile car. Spraying a 200 hit out of the hole with a th400 with a 2.48 first and a 4.30 is going to hit the tires pretty hard and be more challenging to hook up then a pg with either a 1.76 or 1.82. Just my .02.
