I did a back to back test in my LT1 Formula when I was running IHRA Pure Stock. There was a 0.1 drop in ET in the 1/8th when I switched from conventional 20-50 to 0-30 synthetic oil. Just something to think about if you are looking for cheap HP.

Damn, you dropped a whole tenth from an oil change? Do you think the gain was more from the viscosity switch or from the dino to synthetic switch?

That is true for a short usage, but you don't wanna run it in a daily driver! The 0-30 will not hold up to daily usage - I just read a test on that recently. Those who use the very thin racing oils change their oil VERY frequently (like after each trip to the track).

I use 10W30 Amsoil and have seen around a half tenth from it (over conventional racing oil). It holds up very good in a daily driven/strip car. Running oil that is too thick just robs horsepower cause your engine has to pump the thick oil.

I run the Mobil-1 0-30 about thirty passes betwean changes without any bearing issues. The oils that you need to be really careful of are in the 0-10 range and are, in my opinion, only good for a couple of passes.

The main reasons that I run light weight synthetics are;

1. Superior oil film to regular oil.

2. Less windage.

3. Faster drain back.

I never run more than four quarts in my LT1 Stocker motors which go thru the traps at 7200 rpm. As a side note my 2003 Mustang had 5-20 oil from the factory.

Best Regards,

Dam in my 99 TA book it recommends 5-30 for the LS1 and if you are in a very hot climate 10-30 and in bold print it says do not run 20-50 .
