Default What's the fastest 1/4 mile stock car built in the 60's?

Trying to settle an argument.

Dodge Hemi Dart and Plymouth Super Stock Hemi Cuda. Hands down, no arguement needed. They were factory cars, but NOT street cars (they were sold without titles to keep them on the track). Fiberglass and alum parts. Rollbar stock, no back seat, only option was which tranmission. Built to dominate the strip, you get the point Was it production? Well there were about 80 of each built, but a large part of the work was done by hand by Hurst and not MOPAR at an assembly line.

As badass as they are, they don't count for nothin because there not production.
It's like the cars of today, the Vector W28 will make the F1 McLaren look like it's standing still in the 1/4, 0-150-0, 0-200, 0-60 and since the F1 can't even go 250 mph, the Vector W28 whips it there too.
The best thing about the Vector is: it's an all aluminum Chevy 350 with twin turbos. American Made in Venice California. I've seen one here in Ft. Lauderdale take a guy (prospective buyer) for a test drive and it looks like a super-bike taking off down the road. It's a joke!

But, I'm truly still after the fastest PRODUCTION car of the 60's. Key word, PRODUCTION!!!!!

I don't know if this qualifies, but I remember reading in Corvette Fever that when the 68 L88 Vette came out they took one to the track and with just open headers, steep gears (5.something) and drag slicks it ran high 10s! Those all aluminum 427s made well over 500hp right out of the box.

There have been several debates on this subject. It boils down to deffinition of "production" it was either the 68 L88 Corvette or the Shelby AC Cobra. More Cobra's were made than L88's.

Are you referring to the ZL1 BBC? The L88 was an iron block, but you could get the L89 aluminum heads. I don't know if the 'vette got any ZL1's implanted, but the '69 Camaro was blessed with 69 of them. It's kind of hard to call them production, though.

69 1969 ZL1 Camaros (I've only seen 1), 2 1969 ZL1 Corvettes. Someone in the mid 90s dynoed a stock ZL1 Camaro, pulled like ~350 or ~375 flywheel corrected hp. Recurve the distributor, tune the carb correctly, added headers, and made 530 flywheel hp Kept them detuned stock to try and make them a little safer if it did fall in the wrong hands. Do you consider a run of 69 cars that had to be ordered with a Central Office Production Order to be "regular production"?

Crazyquick is right. In order for a car to compete in NHRA stock/super stock racing back in the day, it had to meet production status. That means at least 50 units must be produced. So yes the 68 race hemi dart's and cuda's meet that criteria and are by far the fastest cars produced in the entire century. They are considered production cars. They did come with titles but did not meet crash test standards and came with a label on the door that said"Not intended for highway use". They dominate SS/AA with runs in the 8.8x's. Drag racing illustrated took one right off the truck from Hurst and bolted on some Hedman headers and slicks and ran a 10.9x with nothing else back in 68.They did the same with a zl-1 vette but since only 2 of those were made, it was not considered production. You can say 50 cars is low for production status but that was the rule and Chrysler achieved their goal.Back in 68 and 69, Ronnie sox won over 70 percent of the races he entered in their 68 hemi cuda.

That seems like a PRODUCTION race car. If it didn't meet the crash test standards and had a warning label that said, "not intended for highway use", I don't see how these cars could count. You couldn't walk-in and buy one and then drive it home.

The car I'm trying to find has to be one that was produced for every day people to walk-in, buy and drive home that day.

From the June 1998 Hot Rod Baddest Factory Camaros Then & Now:
In 1969 the ZL1 High Performance Unit 9560BA was available in the Camaro & the Corvette for $4160.15. In the article they had one in a Camaro with a Turbo-Hydramatic with 4.10 gears. They put some equal length headers on it with some 6.5" wide M&H slicks on it & ran 11.64 at 122.15 mph. Basically no traction. About a year later they got a Corvette with the ZL1 engine in it with an automatic and 4.10's but with 10.50x15 Racemasters and ran 10.70's all day. There were 51 of the ZL1's sold out of a Chevy dealership in Kansas City, Missouri.

Well modern 1LE Camaros are regular production and there were years when less than 50 were made. Many years when less than 50 1LE Pontiacs were made.

What about BOSS 429 Stangs, how did they compare?

Since you're looking for what a regular person could buy, the ZL1 Camaros wouldn't count because they were COPO and not RPO cars. L88 Vettes, Hemis in various Chryslers, BOSS Mustangs, etc were all available to the general public. Maybe a Hemi Road Runner or something

I think the Hemi Dart is gonna win this thing.

I know most of you are going to laugh a me but a 66 Nova 327cid 350hp (this was pre 1967) was one of the baddest street cars around... It would give a hemi Charger all it wanted. Bill Jenkins ran one in A/Stock and dominated the class. It was a quick little street car.

I did read an article once about a 66 Nova with a 327, lots of factory deletes and such. I guess it was the 350 hp version. Car had less than 1000 original miles, most of them 1/4 mile at a time

my question but on the subject is why did like everytest in the 60s...they test cars with slicks and headers and tuning and call them stock?

I want to know what they run on those funny old school tires.

That '66 Chevy II Nova that Joe mentioned was also available in 365 HP rated version. It had a 4 speed Muncie and 4.11 gears. I know where one is. Seems like Joe and I argued about there being a 365 HP version or not once. I'll see if I can find the old Hot Rod article on it again.
