Heads, cam, 410 rear, 3250 race weight. 430 r.w. hp. on a mustang dyno. was running 10.60 at 128 with a pt4400. ss4000 it ran 10.44 at 130 same D.A. 60 ft was slightly better. My son and I used to test converters for Yank back about 7-8 years ago, and report our findings too them. My sons car has been 1.27 60 ft. at a race weight of 3,000 lbs , heads and cam, 522 r.w. h.p. 346. Chris1313 on tech.

Dang that's a pretty big difference. You are now runing circle d? Do you think a circle D would out run the ss4000 in the same setup?

Ya, that surprised me. Me and my buddy have the exact same setup.

His, 98 camaro, exhaust, converter
Me, 98 Trans Am, exhaust, converter

The only difference is our converters.

His, yank PT 4000. 60' 1.63
Me, yank SS 3600. 60' 1.71

We both trap the same and his car is lighter but I can't touch his 60' in my car

The only reason Yank steered me away from the PT series was he said my shift points weren't high enough (6500 at the time) and my shift extension/dropback was fine (6500 to 5500 after shifts). So I dont know what you have to do for him to recommend it....

As far as the PT 4000 and converter slip, my buddy's car has 3.23's with shift points set at 6150 and he is starting to run out of gear near the traps. 110 mph

I figured mine up with the SS4k the other day and at the top of second I think the slip was 6 or 7 percent which i thought was reasonable.

Same here with my ss3600. About 6.5% slip.
From my stock converter to the 3600 I lost about 7-8 mph at the end of third with shift points being at 6150 for both stock and 3600 converter

yeah the SS is little more effecient and hits just as if not harder being only a "4000" if you want to use that term vs a PT "4400" trust me i would have kept it in the car if it was better, even tried a hybrid SS4400 and was no better than the orginal SS4000 so back in it went...

That would be questionable. The circled is a 4,800 and is very tight like the ss4000 is. I would say they are about equal. The more horsepower that you make, the higher the ss4000 is going to stall. The higher the rear gear ratio the more efficient the converter is going to be. You want a very high stall off the line, but when its in 3rd gear you want it to be in the 5-7 percent slip range. the pt4400 was around 8-9 percent on my car. Just a tad too much.

It would work ok for maybe a 1/8 mile car that you are going to buzz the motor, and it being a heavy car.

See he is getting you off the line by 1/10 of a second but by the end of the track you are slightly gaining on him due to his converter slipping more than yours.

Thanks for responding everyone.

I think this will be my combo.
SS400
3.73
26-27" tires
I will make a thread soon when I pick my car up. I am going to try and make multiple trips to the track in different stages and see what I pick up. The air is pretty decent in Tulsa right now so I need to get moving. Before long it will be 6k+. I have until the end of June then it will be another year until I am back home.
