Operation TH350 is a bust.
Looks like final decision is going to be swapping the 2-speed back in the car. Traction was absolutely non-existant last night with the TH350 back in, and the car made no more trap speed with the 3-speed vs. the glide. My 1/8th mile speeds picked up a tiny bit (.3-.4mph). The best 60' time I could muster up last night was a 1.47. It's just blowing the tires away on the launch. Plus, the trans brake on the TH350 absolutely refuses to play nicely. We've tried setting it up a few different way now, and it's just to inconsistent for me to try bracket racing with it.
I also did a little data logging, and determined that my stock '98 injectors are not up to the task. They were around 120% duty cycle @ 7000rpm. I think that's why the car doesn't want to be shifted higher than ~7000rpm. I swapped the SVO 42# injectors back in last night at the track, and was able to make a couple more runs. I know the car is now on the rich side, but I don't know how much. I guess it's time to actually go get some dyno time and dial in the AF ratio. I feel there's still a decent bit on the table just from PCM tuning.
Add to all that the fact that I have a bad connector on the MAF, which really decided to show it's *** last night. The last few passes I tried to make, the car would just bog off the line and go nowhere, then jump back to life and go down the track.
Sooo..... Tomorrow I'm ordering a new MAF connector, and a new alternator connector (it's messed up, too). Sometime this week I will finally get the car on a dyno and see what the AF ratio looks like, and get it dialed in. Friday I'm planning on my final tranny swap. Saturday I'll go back to the track and do some more testing/dialing in. Next Wednesday, I'll probably hook up my new (used, but new to me) K&W delay box and play with it a little at the track so I can prepare myself for some electronics class racing.
Montgomery will be a definate no-go for me, even though I do wish I was going to be able to attend. I just have too much going on right now, and not enough money for a trip out of town like that. There are a few big bracket races around here Labor Day weekend, so I'll pick one of those to go race at.
I think with the 'glide back in the car, a new MAF connector, and getting the AF ratio dialed in, the car should be able to run in the 10.35 range @ around 130mph or so in this muggy summertime air we've got around here. I've yet to even run with the exhaust open, so I know there's a little to be gained there. My best run last night with all the problems was a 10.6something @ 128.1. The car hovered in the 127mph range all night.

It sucks to see you still having problems George. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />
Just keep thinking: "when it gets cold, I'll have no problems and be hauling ***!" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Yeah, the MAF connector is a problem, but only an $18 one <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

George I like your approach.I talked to countless drag racers about gear/trans ratio's and they all tell me sometimes have too much is bad.You have confirmed this with your car.
We dont have the SE chassis,or SS chassis to contend with such a killer amount of HP/TQ off the line.U actually go backwards running too much gear, trans ratio's in certain applications.
I really think your car will run very low low 10's come the fall and be very consistant to boot once u dail it in.....
Keep the sunny side up and hope to see u at TR Event kicking tails...

I'll bet George is actually in a GREAT mood since he is actually racing again. Tuning/Tweaking these cars is the fun part, racing is the reward. When all is said and done George, you will be a suspension/drivetrain guru from all the combos you've tried. The experience is going to be invaluable if you think longterm.
I can't wait to see your car and meet you at the Thunder event, this is going to rock!

George,
Yes, take that bad boy and Bracket Race it. Let me know how she does this next weekend. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
Here in the Great state of Texas we also have some pretty big Bracket Race on Labor Day weekend. I might just have to race in a couple. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />
I like the idea about running in the electronics class. I have tossed the idea around about a glide and a box. <img border="0" alt="[devil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" />
Good luck to ya my Drag Racing friend. <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

Re: Operation TH350 is a bust.
Thanks guys!
I'll have the two connectors this afternoon, and should have that wmall problem fixed. I'm going to check the valve lash today as well, and try to hit the dyno tomorrow or Wednesday for some A/F ratio tuning.
Coach, even with a monkey box in my car, I doubt I can cut the kind of lights you do! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
Since Montgomery just isn't going to come together for me, I guess I have no choice but to show up for the TR event in November. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Re: Operation TH350 is a bust.
I really wanted to make the Montgomery race also... Who knows, maybe something will come together last minute... I'm keeping my options open.
As far as the TH350... I'm sure traction could be found, but it wouldn't be easy. I'd probably end up making room for more tire under the car.
I found a little something today which I think explains the loss of trap speed and unwillingness for the engine to rev when I initially swapped in the A2... I was checking my valve lash this afternoon, and one of the locknuts on an intake rocker had come completely off, and the adjuster had backed all the way out, giving me very very little lift on that particular intake valve. I don't know just how much that would affect the car, but it couldn't have been helping.
My plan (tentative at best) is to fix the MAF connector and dyno the car tomorrow to get the AF dialed in. I probably won't go to the track Wednesday, since I don't really have much interest in running the car again until the 'glide goes back in. Who knows, maybe I'll see if it picks up some from the rocker and tuning.

Re: Operation TH350 is a bust.
Too bad you couldn't find the traction to take advantage of the superior gearing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> IMO, it can be done but it of course takes a good hooking track.
I admire your willingness to experiment. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />
Also, hate to hear you can't make it to Montgomery. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> Maybe next time. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Re: Operation TH350 is a bust.
Cant wait to hear the tuning/dyno results with the 42# injectors. I bet you'll pick up a good bit <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
That is crazy with the rocker!! hehehe!
Everything seems ok though? didnt hurt anything in that hole?
What till you get it tuned on the dyno and run open exhaust off the brake with the glide. Over 130mph I am betting and sub 10.3 in the weather <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
Cheers,
Chris
