Default TR230/224 cam + stock heads = 11.25@121.62 (6-speed)

-edit- videos are now posted below.. thanks Justin

Since we didn't have time to install the new 346ci motor we built, I decided to head out to the Thunder Shootout Test 'n Tune night at No Problem Raceway for some final passes with stock heads. I really hadn't planned on going, but a few friends convinced me to go.

I wasn't expecting a whole lot since the motor has been using alot of oil lately. How does 3 qts in 2000 miles sound? lol So, if it blew up, I wouldn't be too dissapointed. Also, I ran through the cutout tonight since I didn't have time to drop the y-pipe and run open headers. This is worth about 9-10rwhp on my car.

I was only able to make 1 full pass:

60' ... 1.543
330' ... 4.645
1/8 ... 7.196
mph ... 95.86
1000' ... 9.399
1/4 ... 11.255
mph ... 121.62

The car actually bogged a little out of the hole launching at 5800 rpms. I let the car cool for about 20 minutes and went to make a second pass.

I launched at 6k rpms this time and spun to a 1.56 60'. However, when I hit 2nd gear, the torque arm ripped out of the top two bolt holes and bent. I didn't realize what had happened until I was almost to finish line when the car started to slide all over the track. What had happened was when the torque arm broke, it pushed the 28" M/T slicks into my rear bumped and caused one of the slicks to blowout. That is a wierd feeling doing 120mph and having a tire blowout. I had to have the car towed home (Thanks Paul!)

Here are some pics:

http://hometown.aol.com/jason99ta20/images/tq_arm2.jpg
http://hometown.aol.com/jason99ta20/images/bumper.jpg

These slicks had only 1 pass on them before they got torn to shreads. I'm also going to have to buy a new 15x10 Prostar since one got bent while slowing the car down after the blowout. Oh well, that's racing.

The only things changed since the 11.48 pass this summer were the Wolfe 6-point cage, lightweight carpet, removed AC, 28x10.5x15 ET Drags (replaced 28" Hoosiers), and I ran through a cutout instead of open headers.

Raceweight was ~3400. I was going to weigh the car, but didn't have a chance after the blowout. Density altitude was -96' on the 11.25 pass.

Overall, I'm very excited about how the car ran tonight. I know with a few more passes, some 11.1x would have been very possible.

The forged 346ci heads/cam motor will be installed this week, along with a new torque arm. LOL

With those kind of numbes, why do heads? Prolly end up slower! You may have found the way to avoid buying heads altogether! Just slap in a TR230/224 and haul ***!

Sucks about the car man Looks scary!

Nice run Jason. What torque arm where you running and will you try a different one this time?

Thanks

Nice times!!!!

I feel ya on the blown tire thing. I was using a buddies Hoosier QTPs and one blew half way down the track! I couldn't figure out why the car was so unruly so I just rode it out with jello legs. Then I pulled off the track with the thump, thump, thump of a flat tire.

Were the bolts long enough in the housing? If they were short maybe the thread engagement wasn't sufficient to hold. I would use bolts as long as possible for the fix. Did the threads strip out? Use Heli coils in the differential if they did along with grade 8 bolts.

Toxic Texan, Moose, F8LPONY, Alonzo, and Brownie : Thanks for the compliments.

Reckless: I want to do heads because 11.25 just isn't quick enough for me. It's 10s or bust now. lol

W8N2SQZ: It was a BMR torque arm and I plan to continue running it.

Chris ARE 360: The weather was around 60 degrees with upper 80% humidity with a baro. of 30.24. The weather got better as the night went on, but I wasn't able to make anymore passes.

Larry: The bolts were grade 8 and I do think the thread engagement could be better. I will see if I can get more engagement and possibly reinforce the bracket somemore.

Alonzo: The GTP heads are going on my new motor.

ALLBORENOSTROKE: LOL, I do remember racing our stock motors about 2 years ago. Alot has changed since then. It should be fun to see how the new setup runs at the track.

Nice times I see we would run about neck and neck.
Now if you guys would just give me a thunder 227/224 I would try to go in the 6's in the 1/8
