Default NHRA Competition License - What's involved??

Anybody know for sure, or been through the process of getting your comp. license??

I've got the application for the license and the physical form already. I understand that I'll need to make a handful of passes to complete the procedure. But is that it? I'm guessing there are set places and days when it happens. Couple half track runs, and then full passes. Right??

The 10 point full cage conversion is set for just after the holidays, and I know i'll need a chassis cert as well. Where does one get that done?

All appropriate saftey equipment will be in the car by then.

any pointers??

thanks

You have to have a car that is capable of running 9.999 or lower and meets all NHRA safety requirements (10 point, net, chassis cert, etc.). Once you have that, go to http://www.nhra.com/contacts/forms.html and download the physical form as well as the comp form. Go get your physical FIRST. Then go to an NHRA track and make sure the track manager is there as well as two licensed drivers. You make two half passes, two moderate passes and two full passes. You will need signatures from the track manager and licensed drivers. Send all your signed paper work along with the original time slips to your NHRA division head quarters and you're done.

Let the track know your intent to make license passes and they will work with you.

Its suppose to be over to seperate days. Two half passes, then one moderate, on one day then a moderate pass and two full passes on another day......They may have gotten rid of that but thats the way it was when I got mine......

There is suppose to be a cockpit test, blind folded also......A licensed driver gave me mine, and it was useful.......

Your also suppose to use the chute on the last pass.......

Harlan,
You can do all the runs in one day just like Derty mentioned. My sugestion would be to go on a test-n-tune day and tell the track your going for your license. They are really helpful and will allow you to make the passes with no other cars in the next lane. I would suggest Mid Michigan when they reopen in Spring since it's an NHRA track locally. Milan, Norwalk, and Grand Bend are IHRA. Most of the time there are plenty of guys there that are willing to sign for you. As far as the the NHRA chassis certification goes, I would suggest you and a few of the local guys who will also need chassis certification meet up at a place and have everyone get it done at the same time to save money. It costed me $75 and no milage fee's because they had 5 cars certified at ARE last year so the inspector didn't have to make a special trip just for my car. I think Mid Michigan has a few days before the season opens that they post when the inspector will be at the track for certifications. If you need a SFI ceritified jacket/pants I have them. When your going, let me know.

I think most everything has been covered here though. It really helps if you KNOW a couple of licensed drivers that will sign off for you.

Good luck!

Cool

I know atleast one licensed driver for sure. I can find another pretty easy i'm guessing.

Good info, thanks guys.

I should have no problem w/ 9 second capable, considering i can't be legal w/ the 6 speed (damn scatter shield). I'll be going for it after the change to a TH400. But i'll squeek in a 9 on the 6 speed just cause i want to

Harlan,

If you need a licensed driver or two I can always ask a few folks for you. I know quite a number of guys in the 7 and 8 second club that would be willing to sign a card for you.

The last couple guys that got their license did all of their passes in one night.
