Default Can I get some info on removing the firewall insulation?

I was looking at the firewall insulation when I installed my Speed Inc. carpet the other day and was wondering if there are any downsides to removing it other than maybe a little more noise in the cabin. Does it cause the floor to heat up more? Any danger with all the wires down there? Also, is there any way to remove it other than just cutting through it? It looked to me like you would have to hack it up to get it out. Thanks for any help.

I would be interested in having your questions answered too. Maybe nobody has removed it. I took it out of my 88 Mustang. The floor did get awfully warm in the summer but I had no carpeting either. Might be bearable as long as you have carpeting. That stuff is very heavy if it is the same as my Mustang and would make for some good weight reduction up front.

I'm gonna remove the heater core and passenger airbag, which was why I was interested in it while I had the dash off. So, if I leave the duct work to move air through the cabin, I can't remove it?

Also, could you tell me the part number for the heater that you bought? Thanks a lot!

When you say you are removing the heater core, do you mean the whole thing that goes thru the firewall or just the heater core itself? Alot of the duct work comes out with the whole thing. There is little left after you remove the heater core and AC condenser and housing. I guess its the AC condenser?

The heater is the only one summit sells. I don't have the part number right now but I can get it for you later this evening. I use it for defrost only.

Back to work for me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Later

hmm, I don't know. I was going to only remove the heater core itself so that I could still have some air blowing in when it was raining. Thanks for your help. I'll think about it some more before I decide.

I looked on Summit and found one that runs off the water pump. Is that the one you have?

Just take a razor to that sh*t. The way Tom is talking about is the right way to get it all out, but you can remove all the visible stuff that hangs beneath the dash with some cutting.

Yes you will feel heat that you did not before. Yes you will hear valve train noise that you didnt hear before.
No you shouldnt have any problems with wires.

are you talking about the plastic with sound deadning behind it. It covers the entire firewall. It has several mounting locations molded right into it for several black boxes. It is also molded around the brake pedal and steering wheel and a few other areas under the dash. It is also clipped into place allong the top where the dash bolts to the frame. Don't even try to to remove it if you don't have the Dash removed, HVAC and all the duct work removed.

All the clips need unclipped and it needs to be cut away from around the brake pedal and steering wheel. After it is removed you will need to wire tie the black boxes in place. There is also a black box of some kind that needs to be removed, then remove the sound deadning, then re-install the black box in the original location. It is a real BIEOTCH to remove this stuff. It weighs around 10 lbs and the tranny tunnel sound deadning weighs around 4 or 5 lbs. It's not worth all the work if you are to take things apart just to remove this stuff.

So there you have it. It's a really hard core weight removal modification.

Only reason I did was because all of the above I mentioned was removed for a 10 point cage install.

Good luck
Tom
