Best compromise tire for the "weekend warrior"?
Here's my particular situation.
Got about a 75-mile highway drive to the
dragstrip outside Orlando. I'd like
to find the best drag tire that will
be OK on the Interstate to get there,
maybe last me for 20 trips there, do a
few passes & back home. I'd like it to go
on a 17" rim (unless I can find some 16"
chrome 10-spokes that look like they
belong).
I don't know the difference between the
three different kinds of Nitto 555s, or any
of the other makers out there... just looking
for happy campers with happy hookup tales.

IMO, the Nitto extreme drags are the best street/drag race tire out there. If you heat hell out of them at the track, they hook fairly well, and on the street, they handle, grip and wear better than the BFG's. I'm probably going to get much argument on this....Just my opinion. WJ.

Nitto tires are definitely a good tire for street and strip. I used 17 inch nitto's with good suspension aftermarket products. Ironically, my fastest time was on nitto's instead of ET street. Good luck.

I would go with NITTOS if the car is driven daily. What are your mods? You may have to just get an extra pair of wheels and some et streets/slicks.

I run around on 315/35-17 Nittos all the time, they're great on the street, and do OK at the track. (They would do alot better for me if I heated them up and learned how to launch with them)
If I have actually planned on going to the track, (and I'm not 200+ miles from home) I will take my ET streets along and use them at the track. They hook MUCH better than the Nittos, much more of a chance for breakage on stock rear end though. Right now I limit my use of them to only when I have a trailer at the track I can use, JUST in case I grenade the 10 bolt.
FWIW. I had a set of 255/50-16 BFG Drag radials for a while, driving in the rain with them was like playing russian roulette. They also made the rear end float at highway speeds. I got rid of them and haven't looked back.

Why the best approach is to drive to the track on your 17 Nitto DRs and pull the Convo Pros out of the backseat with the slicks when you get there.
The Nitto DRs are a good all around tire. You can get 5-7K miles on them and plenty of track time. They are very reasonable in the rain for most of their tread life. Now they will tick off your local tire shop though when they have to push your car up into the garge during the first big snow snow storm of the year because you can't get up a 2" incline.

You definately want nittos if you are planning on driving on the drag radials to the track. I have the BFGs and I drove about 100 miles to the track the first time I used them and good lord there is no way I will ever do that again. I now just ride on my street tires and change them at the track. Its not that big a hassle and gives a lot more life to the drag radials.

I am going with a 12 bolt soon and will still most likely run on nittos. I find that they work great and you can tell when its time to replace them when you start getting bad wheelhop. I am a dead hook at 4500 rpms with 245/50/16 inch Nittos and pull low 1.7's at every track around my area which some are not so great( gulfport dragway). and I have pulled 2 1.67's in a row at No Problem raceway .

Re: Best compromise tire for the "weekend warrior"?
The Nittos are better for long trips to track but BFGs can be driven also .They hook better than nittos on most track conditions. If your area track Prep is good then I would get Nittos ,they have to be heated 6-8 sec and then stage Quickly are they will cool off fast. If you changed tires at the track each time the BFGs Would last much longer than the nittos. Nittos work best when new but after 20+ passes they are not so good even with a good amount of tread still there. Bfgs will hook with the cord showing.Driving daly the Nittos are good for about 16,000mi and Bfgs 6,000mi. I drive 50+ miles one way to track on either tire and have no problems. Rain is a problem for both but Nittos are better when it is wet.

I have Nitto's I cant attest for track times yet. I drive mine daily "here in alaska" sometimes in the snow/slush and mostly in the rain/damp conditions right now because all the snow is melting. No complaints yet.

Another vote for the Nittos here... No, they are far from the best "drag racing" tire, but would be a very good compromise for what you're after.

Re: Best compromise tire for the "weekend warrior"?
No doubt for driving that kind of distance and not wanting to change tires at the track, you'll get the most life of the nittos and a decent hook. The ET streets will hook the best though at the track and on the street (weekend street racing). What I haven't heard anyone bring up is the fact that the tires hook better at the track if you do not drive on them on the street much.
For example, I was driving my ET Streets on the street to local street scenes, etc... but I noticed when I stopped going out as much and just used the tires at the track, my 60 ft improved by about .05-.08 easily. So best thing to do is use your regular street tires for the trip, then mount the ET's when you get there. Takes what, maybe 10 minutes to change tires.

Hadn't considered the change-at-the-track
notion. The convertible trunk won't even
hold one of my 17x9.5 wheels (not and have the
lid close) and I'm not sure about the fold-down
back deck. Will have to see. The seats in the
convertible are more like "toddler pockets".
It looks like the Nitto choice is the best for
me, for now. It's only a mostly-stock auto SS
with 3.23s.
