Default Is there a such thing as it being too cold out to run your car?

Atco dragway in NJ stays open pretty late in the season and opens very early.I got some bugs to work out and should be ready in a coulpe of weeks to go to the track. Before I did H&C I got my best times when it was 40 degrees out. It was COLD. I had the heat on in the car. I was just wondering is there a such thing as it being too cold incase I don't get there as soon as planned.I'll take a easy pass just to warm up the rear and tranny fliud. I'm hoping to get a new best NA pass then I'm gonna spray a 150 shot to see what I can get out of it and bring my jets for the 200 shot just incase it looks like I'm hooking enough to use it. Either way I'm going

Only down side is the track really goes away when it's cold. A cool 45* sunny day is perfect. Air is great and the sun keeps the track warm so you can hook.

yeah, the only problem is traction. and if its hard for you to hook in the first place, dont even bother in the winter.

Track gets bad when it gets cold, and also the fuel can have a hard time atominzing with the incoming air. I believe its something around 50 degrees that the performance starts to go down -- but don't quote me on that.

But hell, I say go have some fun while the track is still open.

cold air is great usually (better oxygen content), just as long as the following 4 things are heated:

1-engine block, heads and intake in some cases but keep air charge cool
2-driveline. Trans and rear. cold means thicker fluid, and that chews more power
3-track surface. the cooler the track gets, the greater chance it won't hook. This is dependant of course, but I've found once below 70 degree track temp, good luck!
4-driver ever try changing gears while grabbing a cold shift handle? at least in my case I don't mind wearing the SFI jacket in the cooler weather. 95 degree summer air, now that's another story......

YES!!!!
50 degrees below 0 and your gas lines will freeze, your tranny fluid will be as hard as a rock and you will probably die in your car....

as for how cold will you run slower at,the answer is when the track is not hooking.

If the sun is out I'd keep on racing at atco until it dropped below 38* Night time and cloudy is right around 40*. Atco used to be pretty damn good no matter what the conditions when I was racing regularly. Once the temp drops down that low you have to start worrying about things breaking

We have problems with cool damp nights here in the Fall. I don't care to race on a dew-covered track, and usually the track officials are on top of things enough to either not open the track or shut things down early. We've actually only got one more Tuesday night on the schedule for this season (October 26th). Then it's sit around and wait until March for things to fire up again....
