Best Automatic for racing only
Ok we just finished trashing our 4l60e and want to replace it with a strong transmission that we don't have to replace every year.
The car is a 99 Firebird putting out 405 rwhp on motor only with 373 rear gears and is only used at the track. Looking in the future I would like add a 100-150 shot and need something that will hold up to the abuse that is given to it.
Thanks in advance
Alan

My 4L60 is about too die too (slipping into third pretty bad). I've decided to go with a reverse manual TH400 with a trans brake. It's a pretty common set up and tons of guys are running them. The transmission and and everything you need for the swap is still cheaper than a well built 4L60.

hey GM, if you go with the 400, you better step up those 2.73's or you'll be launching like a honda on the other hand, you'll have the best epa around town of anyone.
the best trans is relative. how far are you going to go with your car? what's it weigh? what's your gearing and are you willing to change it? how about a convertor? with all that being said, call a reputable shop that deals with transmissions tailored to your needs. a few good names are, Rossler--TranzKing--Mikes Transmissions. just tell them your setup and your plans, and they'll take it from there. hope that helps.

Dave

Yea, I'm going with a narrowed 9" from Billingsley. I haven't decided on gears yet, not sure if I want something like 3.55s or 3.73s. I drive the car on the street alot plus I'd like to stick with a 26" tire.

powerglide is the best racing only trans. Look at most race cars including dragsters and that's what they run. Less weight, less loss of hp through gearing (only 2) and endless supply of parts selection. kinda a bitch to drive on the street b/c of the low 1.76-1.8 series 1st gear. Turbo 400s are nice too, but heavier than a 'glide.

If you want a good race tranny, call Brian (MadMan). He will hook up. I bought a TH-400 and converter from him (both built by the Trans King) and haven't looked back. It's handling the 200 shot very well. You can order it regular or reverse pattern. I have the reverse pattern, manual shift, w/transbrake.
