Default Need help on 1/8 mile

I have a 1991 z28 350 tpi with a few mods, and 275 kumho low profile tires. I am gonna take my car to the track soon(1/8 mile) and I want to know how to cut the best time. I know that 60' has a LOT to do with it, but I need to know some details. Also I have an a4 transmission, and a decent stall.

1. What gear should I start in?
2. What RPM should I launch at?
3. How should I do my burnout, or should I do one at all?
4. The car is lowered, will this make a difference in what I should do?
5. Should I shift around 4800 or a little lower?

All input appreciated, thank you.

1. What gear should I start in? Leave it in OD
2. What RPM should I launch at? Launch at idle. If gears aren't stock, then you might have to launch at a higher RPM. Just practice to see what works best for you
3. How should I do my burnout, or should I do one at all? Don't bother with doing a burnout on street tires. The burnout just makes them "greasy". Your best bet is just to drive around the water box, and then do a dry hop (when the track official gives you the ok to pull up towards the tree)
4. The car is lowered, will this make a difference in what I should do? Nope, doesn't really matter.
5. Should I shift around 4800 or a little lower? See answer to question #1

Just remember that practice makes perfect. Just keep making runs, and try different techniques. You'll eventually find what works best for you. All in all remember to have fun!

Run 14 psi in your kuhmo's by pass the water box and give them a nice burn out. smoke them alittle. I have cut a 1.811 60' on my 275/40/17's Kuhmos, and stayed pretty consistant in the 1.8's.

I' give you my .02....I had a '90 iroc (5.7 tpi) best run 13.0 @ 103 1/4 mile with a gear and exaust and some other minor mods....This is what worked best for me.....I always put the car in D ( I may not help at all...but that is what I did) 2. I did load up the converter at the line. ( stock verter so it does load very much..but it did run quicker loaded, always.) 3. Most people will tell you to go around the water box....however I tried both...for me I always hooked better doing a burn out in the water then dry hop it twice to make sure you have all the water off the tire. also drop the tire pressure to about 14 psi or so. I do think this depends on you specific brand of tire.....but this is what worked for me. 4. I dont think so. 5. Shifting at 5000 work best for me.....This motor does not make power up high.....4800 may be perfect...you just have to play with it a little and see what works......people aways said iroc's were slow.....but I spanked many a mustang with it.

Thank you man, and yeah, IROCz and other 3rd gen 5.7 L98's are far from slow I was reading on thirdgen.org about how a 5.7 l98 made 502 rwhp with a H/C/I setup. I believe it was Holley Stealth Ram for the intake, Vortec Heads, and a pretty big Comp cam

what does the I stand for in H/C/I?

with 502 rwhp it better be blown, turboed or juiced.... because with just intake heads and cam the l98's arent making that kinda power or we'd all have one.....

just my .02$

The last sentence in kyle91z28's post answers your question.

the tpi 350 engine is pretty torquey so i would try to load it up on the line also and if you can't flat foot it just roll into the throttle.usually lowered cars don't transfer weight as well because of stiffer springs so traction may be an issue, especially with a bigger stall.
