Question Which motor for 10.5" Natural Outlaw

I am looking in to building a 10.5 natural outlaw car. I was wondering what kind of engine would you go with? Any engine is allowed including alluminum production engines. Fuel injection is allowed although no one local is using it. BTW the car that won last time ran a 5.42 in the 1/8. Here is a link to the rules http://www.natural-outlaws.com/rules. One other thing I don't have an endless budget.
The car I am using for this is a 95 Firebird that has a v-6 in it.

OK let me narrow it down some and see if this helps.

#1 keithcraft motorsports 402 long block.
#2 ls2 stroker (something in the 420ish range) with afr milled heads.
#3 426 cid old school small block with canfield heads.

That's three choices that I'm looking into.
BTW the car will have a th400 or th350 trans with brake a 9" rear and either a s&w ladder bar or a complete bmr suspension system. Hopin to weigh in around 3000 lbs.
Any suggestions on this set up would be nice.

if your going small block you're definately going to nee to go with an 11* or 15* head to be competetive i don't think an 18* will make enough power to do what you want.

If the rules allow anything, I'd go BBC all the way. You'll get hit on the weight penalties, but you can make up for it w/ the HP and torque you make.

here's some more bad news...going 5.halves in the 1/8 all motor isn't cheap...period

I'll second that. For a 3000# car, it's going to take *atleast* 850-900 hp to go mid 5's in the 1/8. I'm no expert by any stretch, but it's fairly easy to make 1.5hp/cubic inch N/A so that means you'd need 500+ cubes minimum. Anything less will need to make closer to 2hp/cube which is a lot harder and more expensive.
