I've had the same question, and I haven't gotten an answer. From what I understand, NPR in Louisiana, which is pretty tough on tech, has let them pass without battery boxes. But, last time I looked up the rule, there was no different treatment for sealed batteries.

EDIT: Per NHRA rulebook- NOT verbatim "in lieu of a rear firewall a sealed battery box must be used. box must be fastened to the frame rail or frame structure. box must be vented to the outside." Something to that effect. Taylor offers an NHRA approved battery box.
I'm not certain but I would imagine a wet-cell battery would require a firewall between the passenger compartment and itself. A dry-cell battery would not. I currently have a wet cell battery and plan on getting a Taylor sealed aluminum box to seal it up. Taylor's box is NHRA legal.
Correct me if I am wrong

Guys I asked my tech inspector on Saturday when I got my cage certified. It is ANY BATTERY. I specifically asked about Optimas because that is what I have and he said YES ANY battery, so I was glad I had mine in a box
The rules havent caught up with technology and may never.

The tray and box will fit as long as the box fits "in" the tray. BMR's tray mounts in the well area where the spare was. I can't imagine any interference from the plastic piece. I am fabbing a structure similar to a BMR battery tray mount to house my Taylor battery box. That way NHRA tech's can't say anything since it is fastened to a frame structure AND sealed in an NHRA approved battery box.
Good luck

Kyle, I've already pursued this one with the NHRA. The rule currently stands as is. A battery must be in a box if there is no firewall as was written above. Just because it's sealed doesn't separate the acid in the battery from the driver in the event of a puncture. A rear firewall of sorts does.
The small Summit aluminum battery box fits in the spare tire well just fine.

Thanks Steve. I talked to Joe and he had already ordered the battery Tray so were going to use it and the Taylor Box. I believe it was the same one Kevin used...... That way i am legal.
Thanks guys for your input.
