Default Limitations of the stock aluminum drive shaft

In a heavy street car launching on slicks or drag radials with stalled auto. What kind of power are people starting to chunk out the stock shaft?

I've never broken one so I can't say for sure, but as long as the car doesn't wheel hop or have a trans-brake I think it would take a lot of power to break one. FWIW, I ran one for a couple years making 480-500 rwhp and never had a problem. It's usually the violent hit from the 6 speeds that tear them up. I've seen many bolt-on 6 speeds sling them, but not autos.

Well.... don't know where the limit begins, and am in an M6 car, but my lowly 460rwhp launching at 6000 on slicks was all it took to rip mine in half like a piece of paper

Buy a good DS. Cheap insurance IMHO.

*EDIT* Jeffrey- how's the car comin'?

SLOW, very slow. I really just started back on it, so I would say this year will be a wash. Hopefully next year. Bigger, badder faster........

About 600 rwhp and a clutch that and tire that dead hooks and it will go.

I witnessed 383LQ4SS's get ripped apart like a diet coke can a few months back at BMP.

Guess another advantage to the world of High stalled, trans braked auto's...mines still in there, wont last forever, but hasnt broke yet. 4,000 transbraked launches, coming out of the hole on a 250shot and slicks.

I know someone that busted ont on nitto's with about 410 rwhp in a stick car.... alot of it has to do with pinion angle too, I think this car wasn't running the right pinion angle.

My buddy broke his twice with only ~340 rwhp and 26" Hoosiers dumping the clutch at 6200. This was at NPR though, that place claims a bunch of driveline parts!

Mine did go a bunch of 1.44s. But as DSG just said when I really tried to dump it hard with a new SPEC stage 5 it snapped it like nothing. I put in a moly shaft and it went 1.39 babying it out of the whole compared to the launch I tried with the aluminum one..lol. When I snapped the aluminum one it was a 6500 rpm clutch dump spraying a 300 shot out of the whole for a total of about 850 rwhp. I am not urprised i didnt hold.

I made 40+ passes in my 3800 lb,565rwhp 6sp car and never broke the DS.

Every pass was a clutch dump on the limiter with 26" ET Drags.1.44-1.56 60'.

Mine went the first time out after H/C. Wasn't too hard of a launch on nittos, in a six speed.
See sig.

It's hit or miss, but if you are driving the car to the track, your towing bill
will be just as much as a steel driveshaft.

I switched mine before it had a chance to break, like most of my other parts.
