Default TH350/TH400 Guys.. What gears are you running?

I'll be running a TH400 with a 4000 stall converter.. I have a narrowed 9in with 3.50 gears and I'm running 28x10.5 ET Drags.. The guy I bought the car from was running 10.30s with 515rwhp with a 5k stall and the same 3.50 gears cutting 1.4x short times..

I plan to run a 325/50 MT Drag radial, but I was thinking about running the 295/65 or 315/60 MT DRs.. The 3.50 gear seems kinda high for a 30in tire. What do you guys think?

What gears and what size tires are you all running?

Thanks in advance..

I have a TH-400 with a 3.23 gear and a 26" tire. On nitrous I go through the traps at 6200-6300 RPM and on motor its around 5700-5900 RPM I need a gear though.

TH350, 4k stall, 3.23 gears, 26" tires and no way will I cross the traps with both stages working unless I really push the rpm limits. I switched to a 28" tire, and waiting on the 9" with 3.50 gears to arrive any day now. Think that will be perfect match for the tires, stall and massive nitrous injections.

I have the 315/60/15, will be going with the same trans/stall combo and have a 4.56 gear. I plan to cross the traps at 140mph/7100rpm. www.richmondgear.com is your friend for gear selection

I will be spraying 200-300hp worth of the good stuff so I will be in the 750rwhp range.. I think the 3.50 gears will work good with the 325/50's.. Not sure if it will be enough for the 315/60's or the 295/65's.. Only time will tell!

What's your car weigh or what do you guess it weighs?

TH400, 4000 stall, 3.70 gears in a Moser 9"

my old setup on spray used to run the traps at 131mph (150 shot) and I used to go thru the traps at like 6200ish....

This is on a 28x10.5W ET Drag....

I'll keep the tires and gears the way they are since my new motor will be able to rev to 8200-8500 so even on spray trapping 150 i'll have enough gear to cross the traps...

for all you guys looking at gear calculators, lets NOT forget converter slippage. its significant in bigger stalls (over 4000). i am probably going to a 3.73 in my TH400 with 28" radials.

So with a small shot and around 625rwhp the 3.50 gears might leave a little ET on the table, but with the big shot making around 750rwhp the 3.50 gears might be just right..

Thanks for all the info guys..

A 3.50 probably wont make a huge ET difference and will make the car a little easier to hook up. All depends how high you wind the motor up..

If I had to guess I'd probably be turning the motor around 6800-7k rpms.. Not really sure on that though. I should have cam specs this week as soon as I can get ahold of my guy at Comp.

What about a TH400 (around a 4000-4200 stall) with 4.11 gears and 28" tires revving to 7000-7300rpm? Would I make it through the 1/4 OK? What kind of speed should I expect? I am running a 408 with about 12-15lbs of Procharged boost.

Yes, yes, very good point. Also remember that if you run a bias ply slick the tire will grow and you'll effectively loose some gear!

Just take a gear calculator and add 500rpm for a typical 8-9" converter with your target mph/tire size and you will be close. Better off being a little conservative then running out on the big end..
