Default Helmet question....

I need to get a helmet for the track, I have never bought a helmet before and have no idea what size to look for.

Is it a bad idea to buy a helmet based solely on the sizing guides without trying it on first since I am looking on ebay and stuff....

Also anything wrong with a cheapo HJC helmet as long as it is DOT / Snell-M2000 compliant?

The online size charts worked for me.

Snell2000, you're good to go.

Safety question.....What kind of value do you put on your head? Put a "cheap-o" helmet on a million dollar head? Just food for thought. I always ask.."Do you have a $100 head?"...I know everyone's budget doesn't allow for the most expensive....BUT, You will thank me if you ever have to use that helmet.

Not yet, but I REALLY need a new one.
My head is worth more than a $40 helmet, I think.

I think if I end up needing a helmet while only running 12s a cheapo helmet will be the up there with the least of my problems

i used to ride motorcycles ALOT. and from my experiance, helmets are like everything else, you get what you pay for. i am pretty sure that haveing a good helmet has save my life two times now. i know a few other people that can say the same thing, that ride bikes, and race cars.

but hey, it is just your brains, what are they worth??

I run 11's with a cheapo HJC helmet, no one ever questioned it. I don't ware it to save my life though, just to pass inspection and not get kicked off the track. I wouldn't wear any helmet if I didn't have to. I guess I'm one of those crazy idiots that just doesn't give a ****. I have an extra one if you want it. It's black with a clear shield. It has some scratches on it and it looks like it held up pretty good for who ever wiped with it, I bought it used. I'll let you have it for real cheap, just pm me if your interested.

Still haven't heard anyone say "thank god for my _______ brand helmet, I'm sure a moderately priced helmet would have killed me". Dude- you're right; if you come to the point of testing your helmet, you do have more to worry about!

I have two different HJC helmets, and I've not had any problems with them. My current one is an open face M2000 spec helmet. Simpson, Bell & Impact don't make a helmet large enough for my head, so that's one of the reasons why I went with the HJC (the price helps too). The HJC did, and my big melon fits just fine in my XXXL helmet. I got mine online from Tonker.

Any Harley riders that own a Harley Davidson-branded helmet might be surprised to find out that HJC makes the helmets for Harley. Why pay the Harley price when you can have the exact same helmet for hundreds less.

not anymore unfortunately.

Snell 90's just went out 1/1 of this year, and it seems they decided to make it 12 years now.

that don't make sense since snell ratings are 5 year intervals...90, 95, 2000, 2005.

Glad I got a 2005 this year

Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but does a Snell M2000 = a Snell 2000? I was looking at them online and says the M2000 is for Motorcycle, but is it still good for the racing a car? I'm going to be heading up the Lebannon Valley Dragstrip for the first time this year, and they say they go by NHRA rules.
