Default Water Wetter or Purple Ice

Local track said no cars are allowed to have antifreeze in the cooling system. Planned to install distilled water. Need input which additive is best for LS1 engine and how much you would install. One bottle or two?

Thanks

Coolant on the track is one of the hardest things to clean up at the drag strip. Even harder to clean than oil or tranny fluid on the track.

Thanks Joe. Learn somethin' new everyday!

Must be a serious drag strip to make everyone run only water. It seems like it would deter a ton of the DD cars from coming out and spending money.

Double check those rules on the coolant. My track, which is NHRA-owned, states no coolant in race cars (meaning a street car can have it, but putting it in your dragster is a no-no).

In my Nova (which sees the most racing) I only run about 20% coolant anyways, the rest is distilled water and a bottle of water wetter. Works good for me!

I have used both, they are essentially the same. Get which ever is more available to you. I run two bottles of the stuff because we run straight water in our Z28, if you have coolant mixed in as well then I would follow Derek's suggestion.

Well this is an IHRA track and they said if you are caught with antifreeze you will stop racing at that moment, and if you are caught again you are banned from the track for one year.

I will use the Purple Ice at least that way they can't claim it is dex a cool.

Thanks for the help.

Still sounds a little weird. I'd check with the track's manager and explain that all street cars have coolant and the track is expecting them to switch it for just racing? I donb't run IHRA, thus I don't have a rulebook, but I still think they'd allow coolant for a street car.

Hope you get it figured out!

If you don't live in an area that has freezing tempatures, then you probbaly have nothing to lose by running water and the purple ice anyways.. so I'd just do it to appease them.

Why distilled water? How many gallon jugs do I need?

I picked up some purple ice yesterday. I have been just running straight water.

Coach - distilled water gets rid of most hard minerals since without anti-freeze you don't have any rust inhibiters. You car doesn't sit still long enough to even gather dust though!

Many folks mistakenly believe that anti-freeze helps cool an engine. Actually it makes it run hotter. Water with a wetting agent is the best for keeping engine temps down.

LS1Joe is dead on - antifreeze is the worst thing for a track surface.

I could see them enforcing this for events like bracket points, but not for a TnT session.

Just my .02

Doesn't Water cool and Coolant lubricate the waterpump?

Yeah, what he said!

I mix a little coolant in to prevent freezing. Ever seen a block freeze b/c of straight water? I have, and I only live in northern Florida
