Default 500hp plus, T-56?

I have a question about T56 in Low ET and High HP cars.

I am running a stock T56 with the fluid changed to GM Synchromesch.
It works good and has lived up to over 100 6,000rpm plus launches off a two step and shifting at 7,200rpm.

I am looking to keep my 6 speed T56 in the car (non proshifted) but I want be able to shift it higher, above 7,500RPM, handle power north of 500hp to the wheels, shift quicker and smoother, and live up to launching off a two step @ 7,000rpm.

What parts do you recommend to be changed?

What Fluid do you recommend?

Will replacing the stock paper synros with carbon fiber and replacing the teflon shift pads with bronze make a big difference?

What parts do you not recommend changing?

Who is running north of 500hp and shifting at or above 7,500rpm in there T56 with 5&6 gear still their?

Thanks Man
Bob

The only way it will stand a chance is to use a gto style setup. The gto has the same double and triple cone setup that a c5 and zo6 has. As the standard m6 in the f-body has double cone syncros in 1st and 2nd, and single cone syncros in the rest of the gears. Think of the blocker rings as brakes for the gear, when you appily pressure to the shifter it moves the slider, and the slider teeth contact the blocker ring teeth and it applies the friction surface to the cone on the gear, the faster you can slow the gear ( carbon vs paper lined) the faster and smoother you will be able to shift. The carbon blocker set up will increase the durability as the carbon takes far more abuse than that of the paper lined blockers. The fork pads also increase the durability and piece of mind. Solid keys for the 3/4 slider are also a must as the stock ones tend to get destroyed when trying to shift fast. Clutch hydralics that disengages perfectly are also a must. The gear set becomes the weak link above 700 to the wheels. I recommend cryoing the 1-4 hard parts to give them more of a chance to survive the abuse. The gm syncromesh is good but I like the Royal purple syncromax, and mobil one atf, but with the stock paper lined syncros some brands of atf attack the friction material. If you have any more questions give me a call.

Thanks for the info.
Joe, with the doulble and tripple cone set-up, will it be able to be shifted at or above 7,500rpm?

What do you think about Face Plating for a Street/Strip

Daymn... 7500rpm?

Im launching at 6500 or so and shifting at 7K on my stock GM T-56 with 63K miles on it. LOL I learned to drive a stick with that transmission.:p

Im not far north of 500, only 507.9, but then again it is only a H/C setup on a stock GM Shortblock.

I'm just honestly glad that my trans has been holding up so far with nothing done to it, aside for a steel 3-4 shift fork and a change of fluid. I have close to 300 passes on it, many with nitrous and my old H/C set up. But I think its living because I don't abuse it more then it needs to be. I have never forced a shift, I never put pressure on the shifter to preload the next gear, and I don't beat on it on the street.

Good Luck

7500rpm should not be a problem with a good clutch. The face plating is up to you it is drivable but it takes some getting familiar with. 1-4 face platted with the normal 5th and 6th would not be so bad. But it all in what you can deal with. I had 200 passes on my stock t56, I installed billet 3-4 slider keys and made about 100 more passes before I got my pro shifted t56. I now have stepped up to a face platted t56. I love my face plated t56. It is smooth as glass at 7200 making 460 plus whp.

Joe,
How much ET/MPH did you gain going from a sycros to face plating trans?

That is extremely impressive!
Are you still running a stock 27 spline output shaft also?
How do you like the Pro Shifted set-up and are you power shifting it?
Thanks,
Bob

After my third rebuild with my old T56 I decided to go proshifted. I also had 5th and 6th gear removed, and all the internal parts REM polished and cryo treated. I was incredible after that. Never missed a gear, and it never broke again shifting at over 8000 with about 600rwhp. Sometime I miss that old tranny.

Grannyshifting,
The parts that would be chaged would be the mainshaft as well as all of the gears. Basicly putting the guts of a gto or corvette inside the only thing that would not be changed would be the rails and some of the small parts.

Face plating is kinda like proshifting but the wear surface is on the side of the gear and not on the id of the gear, you can go longer periods of time between maintence. most proshifted t56 need service about every 50 passes to debur the sliders. Also over time the proshifted trannys will begin to jump out of gear. That is usually the sign that the sliders need to be debured.

It is stock spline. I am not powershifting just shifting fast. I want to powershift ,but everytime I go to do it I'm like, just easy shift and a make a clean pass it left to good that time to take a chance on missing a gear

I will powershift it next time out and hopefully get a tenth out of it if it lasts that long

The proshifted part is great! Powershifting will really put it to the test here soon. I'll tell you the best thing I 've bought yet for that car is the hurst pistol grip handle its awesome!

That is amazing and says a lot for the T56 tranny.
What drive shaft are you running?
I also think power shifting will net you some reduced ET and increase your MPH.
Good luck and keep us posted on the results.

The driveshaft is a chromemoly shaft by Jerry Bickel Race cars.

I think powershifting is a good tenth
