motor plate allows you to move the motor down and back in the car to change the center of gravity of the car. it also frees up a lot of room around the motor for bigger headers and other things of that nature. i'm sure it helps a lot with stiffening up the front of the car also by tying the motor into the front suspension

Very well put, plus in the old days we only had stock blocks to build up.
On really high powered cars u could actually rip the motor mounts out of the block. Cracks in the block = bad! ! ! !
