Default Do I need my relocated battery in a box to be legal?

I have the battery in the back spare tire spot, securely mounted. Does it need to be in a sealed box to be track legal?

+1. And don't forget anytime you put the battery in the rear a battery cutoff switch is required. -Mark

Why couldn't you line the back side of the panel with sheetmetal, mount the battery on the side of the frame (in the spare tire well) in a box like BMR sells. Then drill a hole in the bottom of the well for the vent?

i just put mine in a box..the cost of that fancy aluminum bracket that jegs or summit sells is about the same as an aluminum box...and id rather just have it in the box to avoid any questions.

I did help. I showed you where to find it. If you don't own a rulebook I would get one instead of having a bunch of opinions from the internet world instead of the facts as they are printed. It could save you from being sent home from the racetrack and having to do it a second time.

page 221 of the 2007 rule book is altered/funny car cage construction.

Want to try again and maybe take 30 seconds to type what it says?

on second thought I doubt you'll help. here it is for everyone.

All batteries must be securely mounted; must be of sufficient capacity to start vehicle at any time. Batteries may not be relocated into the driver or passenger compartments. Rear firewall of .024 inch steel or .032 aluminum (including package tray) required when battery is mounted in trunk. In lieu of rear firewall, battery may be located in a sealed .024 inch steel, .032 inch aluminum, or NHRA-accepted poly box. If sealed box is used in lieu of rear firewall, box may not be used to secure battery and must be vented outside of body. Relocated battey(s) must be fastened to frame or frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8 inch diameter bolts. OEM located batteries without complete OEM hold down hardware must be secured to OEM battery box/tray using the same 3/8 inch diameter bolt hold-down method described in previos sentence. ("J" hooks prohibited or must have open end welded shut.) Metal battery hold-down straps mandatory. Strapping tape prohibited. A maximum of two automobile batteries, or 150 pounds combined maximum weight (unless otherwise specified in class Requirements), is permitted. Maximums may vary according to class Requirements.

The small Summit Aluminum battery box fits in the wheel well perfect and will hold an Optima battery just fine. You just need to make a bracket on the underside of the car that can be used to tie a bracket in with the frame rail or use one similar to the BMR bracket. Some fab work would be required to make a BMR like bracket because it will not work with the battery box.

will the red top optmia batteries work well for a DD or do you need to upgrade to a bigger battery. I don't have any major draws (factory AC/Heat, Factory Stereo etc ie no kickin system).

Does anyone make a complete plug and play battery relocation kit. I have seen BMR's but it doesn't include the box, summit makes a kit with box, but doesn't have a mount with it. Surely someone out there makes a kit, if not there's some $$ out there for the first one who does.

I will conceed to fat fingers and poor typing only. It would take me more than 30 seconds cause I'm old.

Nasty -TA and others,
Since you think I am wasting all of your time, I will use some of mine to take one of you young folks on our team and teach them the finer points of drag racing, engine building, and getting suspensions to hook. Maybe you will get a shot to drive. We have LS1 and LT1 Stockers and Super Stockers. Anyone game? Send me a PM. I am in Southern NJ. I am not full of BS.

red top iswhat i use on my daily driver and so do a lot of others,i dont know of a better batery for a daily driver.

as for the comlete kit ive never seen one.they never come with the ALT wire and thats a prety importent part of the kit.what i did was buy a batery box and then just went and baught all the wireing and cut off switch sepretly.
