metal/plastic gas tanks, weight loss
Need to swap out fuel pumps.. Sooo i was pondering on swaping out mine, '94z metal one, for a later ls1 style plastic one. What years are compitable, can i get one out of a trans am too. Anyone know the weight differance too. Further on, i do not want to do a fuel cell because it is a "street car" if you follow me. Need all the weight loss i can and not look like a full on race car. Anyone do this.

jerry, I had looked into this for my car before. I guess the sending unit will not work so the gauge will be off. some guy was saying that you couls do it but the gauge would be off 1/4 tank or something. I did a search in the fueling section and came up with some good stuff before. I think I heard it was about 16 pounds lighter. or the tank was only 16 pounds, i can't remember.

you can use the new style "platic" tank, just be sure to use your "lt1" style sending unit, and lines. i looked into this a while back, but ended up sticking w/ the metal b/c i decided to sump the tank.
oh i have a 2001 plastic tank, stock pump/sending unit laying around.. actually for sale. pm me if interested.

I have been thinking of doing this also and was wondering if the weight difference was going to be worth it. I wouldn't go by how much gas it will hold bc most guys that I know don't race with a full tank anyway.

My steel tank weighed 18lbs, so unless the plastic one is lighter then air you arent going to save that much
There is little to no weight difference between the two, those weights in the sticky are old and no one has updated a lot of that stuff. IMO you are better off with the metal tank, its easier to do large in tank pumps and its very well baffled - plus its easy to sump

Plus all the evap stuff is different so its not an easy swap by any means. Not to mention if the steel tank did weigh a couple more pounds its in a very good place. It is most definately not 20-25lbs lighter like some people thought years ago.
