M6 car - Can you be in 3rd while going though the traps?
I have a stock 99 z28 M6 with stock size rims, 16".
When I take my car to the strip and I'm banging the gears down the 1/4 mile, when I go through the traps, what gear will I be in, 3rd or 4th?
I think 3rd but a few people are saying 4th gear is a must in order to go through the traps without hitting the rev limiter.
Is it possible to not go into 4th to do a 1/4 mile run?
Chris

figure out what your maximum RPM would be and where you shift at..... sometimes you can go up a few hundred RPM above your shift point to run to the end in 3rd......
Then google up a RPM and gear/tire calculator (Type in racing calculators) and you'll find a ton.... put in your tire diameter, gearing, and what ratio that your 3rd gear is (4th would be 1:1) and it'll tell you your RPM at a certain MPH.... if you run less than the MPH it displays and your RPM is in range you should be able to do it......
options are if you can't go to a lower gear, taller tire or build your motor to handle more RPM....
most likely for a stock type vehicle running like 105-109 in the quarter it's possible.... but probably not for a 16" tire (which I think are like 25.5" diameter with zero growth)

u will be shifting to 4th about couple of feets before the end line. dont see any reason to stay in 3rd, i know 4th has less ratio but i dont see that will affect alot.

yes you can
I all depends on if you want to raise your limiter up to. Back in the day when I was running the stock 3.42 gears and a 7200rpm rev limit I was trapping 115mph and never had to shift to 4th. It was funny, everyone else at the track thought I was launching in second because they only heard 2 shifts.
