Default Anyone tried 2.73's in an A3??

I'm thinking of going automatic (TH350 or a TH400)and I came across the idea of putting 2.73's in the rear and finishing the 1/4 mile in second gear. With a 1.62 second gear and 28" slicks second would be good until ~130 mph at 6900 rpms (that includes convertor slippage), which would be idle for my setup. Any thoughts on this? I think it would be cool because the rpms in third would still allow to to drive it on the highway. TIA. ~Tony

I've thought about this as well. It would be like having a powerglide at the track, but then you have a sweet 3rd gear for the highway. The only thing I see maybe a problem is you would need ALOT of horsepower to run decent times with such a low gear in the rear. 2.75 1st gear would be a must and I wonder if a high stall converter would bog for a second?

Just do what I do, run a lockup TH350 with the 2.75 1st gear and 3.23s out back. Around 3000rpms@80mph on the highway, which is livable.
My TH350 shifts itself, has a speedo sensor, looks clean, and is easy to live with.

Terry, what did that setup put you at RPM wise when you were crossing the traps? Idealing you want to be around 500 rpms after your peak power right? That's what I'm aiming for.

1/4 mile RPM was OK because of the shift extension. The RPM at the end of the track doesn't really matter much unless you're a MPH racer.
