Ohhh, the T56 saga gets better yet
Not only did I break the trans, but we figured out the chain of events that caused it. So, my brother noticed today that there was a chunk of the cover missing off the 12 bolt. It definitely looked like something blew up. My dad ended up taking the cover off (I'm out of town for work, like usual) and found all of the spider gears shattered, the clutch springs were laying in the bottom of the pumpkin and the ring gear is jammed up in the pinion gear with some junk. The car rolls freely because there is no longer anything to bind it up.
Now that the ring and pinion are locked up we believe the torque was transmitted back up the driveshaft and it either broke the output shaft in the process and I'm almost certain it wiped out first gear, the synchros and probably 10 other things in the process.
Hopefully I'll have it back together in two weeks in time to be ready for the CZ28 Nationals up here.
If anyone wants to know how I feel, this couldn't describe it any better:

Damn, 12-bolt and T56 in one swift blow. That's gonna leave a mark on the old pocketbook.
Got the T56 out yet? Sure you broke it?

that sucks man...
I think you should spool it with your power level. My spool has held up great so far with only problems to the rear being the broken half inch studs, bent axle and leaking pinion and side axle seal

I'll be checking the trans on Friday. Pretty sure it's broken just the way it feels putting it into the gears. In fact, I can't even tell if first will even go in.

Ditto what chris said about the spool. You should throw it in the trash(right next to mine). First time I hooked it destroyed one of the spider gears. Another good thing about the spool is its cheap.

Clutch is a RAM 910. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. But I'm pretty sure how everything happened and the clutch really doesn't have much to do with it.

Ouch... That's nasty. You going spool?
We started taking my friend's T56 (snapped mainshaft) apart today, to see what may be salvageable. Can't get one of the gears (the dual-gear, just before the main housing) to come off the main shaft. Spent almost 2 hours building puller contraptions, heating the gear, etc... Nothing. May have twisted the main shaft, I dunno. He's going to take it to someone else who might be able to help. When I rebuilt my T56, that gear slid right out by hand.
You dig in to your T56 yet, or are you just replacing with a different trans?

Holy crap!!! These nasty broken parts pictures and stories are enough to make me not drag race my baby (01 WS6 TA - 6 speed) again. I love my $31,000+ car too much to beat the **** out of it. Besides, my pockets aren't that deep to have to fix it all the time even though I'd do the work myself. If I want a pure drag car, I'll build something a hell of alot cheaper and less collectible. Just my thoughts... I respect you 10 and 11 second guys, though!

I've done the same thing before. When I was *just* heads/cam/nitrous and running 11.1s back in 1999. I was at the track and shifted into 4th gear and the rearend broke and locked up, this transmitted up to my tranny and blew the internals of it also. It was a VERY expensive night for me, tow truck, rearend rebuild, tranny rebuild. I also had to rent a car for a week while it was being repaired.
But, considering the rearend blew in 4th gear at WOT en route to a 10-second pass, I'm just glad I kept it from going into the wall! That was VERY scary losing it like that at the top of the track.

I'll be rebuilding the T56 in a few weeks, however I will not be racing with that. I'm also putting a spool in it and a couple other things. We'll see how it works in a couple weeks!
