Default Torque converter experience for 800 hp F-body

I have a new engine ready to go into a 2000 Camaro and would like to know if anyone is willing to share their converter experience for a similar application. I am interested in recommended stall speed and the amount of slippage others have experienced. I expect the car to hit close to 147 mph in the quarter.

Details of the car are:
3100 lbs (with driver)
28" tire
4.10 gear
TH400 trans
Foot brake

Engine dyno results:
Max torque: 624 @6500 rpm
Max HP: 804 @6900 rpm

I would have one custom built for your application. No two cars are exactly the same. If you give a converter company all your specs they will be able to build one that will get the most out of your combo. I've seen cars pick up a bunch with the correct converter over a good but incorrect one.

.

800 HP 2nd gen.
3000 lbs
glide
29 X 10W
same mph
9.31
1.30 60'

used a 5600 Coan, worked great at every track but 1
went to a 5300 worked a little more consistant on slick track

As said, have it made. Much easier than sending in 2-3 times. Good luck.

Pro Stock John - yes, all motor. It's an LS-based engine (436 cu. inches), running All Pro heads, GMPP carb intake and Holley carb.

I will have a custom converter madel; I was just hoping to see if anyone had experience with a similar combination. I had hoped to hear some details of stall speeds and slippage percentage.

mrdragster1970 - I am planning on running a 5600-5800 stall, your combination is close. Did you calculate finish line slippage? And thanks!

That was on the slow car. No data recorder, sorry. Didn't care about that kind of stuff.
Just remember the bigger the converter, the less slip on the big end. Ask if they can get you enough stall with a 9".
If not, try to do what u can with an 8". I'm sure a trans guy will chime in here with better info.

Call lenny @ ultimate converters, I'm running an 8 inch that goes to 5400 on the brake, power band is probably similar, but it's a nitrous setup.... video in sig, first run on the bottle.
His stuff works, he builds all Eastside's race car converters, and they've had no issues going fast since they started having Ultimate do the converters.

I'd go with an ATI converter which is what I am putting in my Camaro, though I am running a PTC converter in my turbo car.

You do realize you're going to have about a 2,500 rpm drop between shifts right?

If you buy from Coan don't buy from a guy named Craig, we've bombed 3 converters he's built in less than 50 runs and I've heard plenty of other stories.

Anyways, I'd call into whatever converter company you're interested in. You'll hear recommendations for all kinds of different places, either way I would want a 9 inch. We had a brand new 8 inch built for our 8XX HP motor and destroyed the sprag 3 different times with little runs. Sent it out to another company, went spragless and they said they could never get an 8 inch tight enough to work best/stay together so we just got an 8 inch converted to spragless. I love the spragless, no problems and very consistant. One drawback in the heat but if you aren't running round robin style it shouldn't be a problem.

i have a neal chance i would recomend them to anyone kind of pricey, mine was $3200 but has a billet aluminum cover and was absolutly perfect on the nitrous and he assured me that the more nitrous i throw at it(in excess of 300shot) the more it will like it.

his name is marty chance

Ouch. I need to start making calls for a converter and $2000 for a converter was not put in the budget.

You can get plenty of converter for under $1000. I didn't spend $2700 on the slow car, trust me. Way more extras on a $2700 unit, that you don't need. Good luck.

I know of several BTE converters that are running around in local 7 second outlaw radial cars that cost less than $1000 and are approaching 200 runs on them without a freshening!

I am about to start on a single turbo 408" LS1 at the shop that I work at and I had JW Transmissions spec me out a converter. We have had some good success with them in many of our own cars, and customer cars so I called them when I needed the one for this car. Time will tell how it works out

Yeah I know plenty of people with 800+ HP cars that have converters under a grand and no troubles. We're going to buy a 9 inch one soon enough and we've already priced it around $900.

You could also take an 8 inch to have someone rebuild into a spragless for $400 and supposedly you can't break them. We killed 3 converters in 3 months then had one that was broke converted to spragless, did a ton or rounds/gained ET and probably put on close to 100 passes with no problem. As I said they do generate heat.

We used a BTE for our memphis passes. Swapped in the new stall and picked up .5 seconds, and 7mph. Still not where we want it, but ALOT closer then the old converter.

Very helpful guys over there.

I see alot of people doing great with Chance or ATI, just all comes down to your budget and what you want to spend on it.
