Default Help, I'm inept at drag racing.

I went drag racing for only the second time ever last night. Last year, I went 13.9 my first time out stock with an M6. This year, I added headers and bolt-ons and I ran a best of 14.084 My 60's obviously need help, I know that's my first step. My best 60 came on the one run I forgot to turn off my TCS/ASR. I was using Firestone Firehawks with 28psi in the rear. I tried launching from 1500 to 2500 on 5 different runs and can't figure out how I'm doing worse than my first time ever.

1800ish rpm Launch
2.423 60'
6.312 330'
9.399 1/8th
79.38 mph in 1/8th
12.016 1000'
14.214 1/4
101.56 mph

2000ish launch w/Traction Control
2.421 60'
6.329 330'
9.410 1/8th
79.73 mph in 1/8th
12.011 1000'
14.198 1/4
102.43 mph

Thanks for any advice.

6 speed on radials is really tough. There is a fine line between hooking and spinning. You don't want to dump the clutch. The best way I've found was to bring your revs up and find where the clutch just starts to catch. From there u just want to slip the clutch the rest of the way out. This isn't the best thing for a clutch but it keeps the tires from lighting up.

What he said. You should consider some drag radials. The new mods are giving the car even more torque, which in turn is making a car that is already hard to hook up even more so.

I added an SLP linelock a few years ago, and my launch went like this.
1. Quick spin the tires to clean them off.
2. Pull up and stage the car.
3. Immediately hit line lock.
4. Bleed out the clutch to preload the rearend
5. Wait for #3 yellow, bring up revs to match launch, switch off line lock and bleed clutch out...praying for traction.
6. Once tires grab, hit nitrous and resume praying for traction.
7. Grab them gears, and avoid missing one at all cost (#1 killer of T-56 is missed shifts)

Now this was back when my car was pretty much stock on Goodyear F-1's and I added an NOS #5177 kit. I managed to kill 3 clutches with less then 13,000 miles on the car. You should consider a Cartek, or a Spec III clutch, along with the drag radials. I ripped up the stock clutch, Corvette Z06 clutch, and a Centerforce Dual Friction inside of 3 years. The Z06 clutch was fried in less then 1000 miles after adding the TNT kit and slicks.

Hope this helps.

I'm so happy to see someone get almost the exact same times as me. I've been out 3 times this year and my best is 13.9, most of the times are 14.2ish. I didn't do anything different to get the 13.9 and the 60' was same as 14.2 run. One thing I do see on my runs is the break light come on when I shift (or tires slip). Yes I turned off traction control. If you have any video of the runs have a look at your break lights. Also, weight can make or break ya. make sure your running as light as you can. spare tire etc. every little bit helps.
Just so you don't feel so bad, Average run for me:

2000ish rpm Launch
2.322 60'
6.209 330'
9.322 1/8th
79.05 mph in 1/8th
11.973 1000'
14.191 1/4
101.04 mph

Are you getting alot of wheel spin on your launches? I have this problem with my 6 speed car now too. I went to the track on Friday for my second time with my car (first time this year) and had a real problem with wheel spin. Last year, the car hooked up pretty good and my best time was 13.77 at 104 mph with 2.29 60'. This year I've added some more h.p. and torque and best on Friday was 13.69 at 106 mph with 2.37 60'. My car doesn't have traction control so I don't have to worry about that. I spin the tires (stock F1's) a little to get the dirt off (avoiding the burnout box). Then, I lauch easy at around 1200-1400 RPM's and avoid dumping the clutch. After moving, then I get into the throttle-this is where the wheel spin happens. It spins quite alot going into second, has a healthy chirp going into third and maybe a little into fourth. I shifted at around 5700-5800 the first two runs and thought it might be a little high, so I shifted at 5200-5400 the third (last)run and ran my best (w/worst 60'). My Eagle F1's still have good tread too. I think we're just SOL without slicks or drag radials. Get those and there goes the rear end from what I've heard. My advice for excessive wheel spin is to save for a real rear end (12 bolt or 9") with steeper gears while you're at it - that can hold up to slicks.
Oh yeah, and it never fails: last year at track- 100 degrees plus and super high humidity, Friday- 85 degrees plus and super high humidity!

Judas, take that GMS MAF off, put the stocker back on and go again!
All of you with the slow times, I've only gone a few times to the track also, but some good news here. One night, on my 3rd visit to the track after 2 disappointing nights with 13.9's (when my car's only mod was Longtubes) I went from 13.7 to 13.0 after 4 runs. I simply adjusted to the track conditions and cut my 60' from 2.4 to 2.17 (still sucks, but hey, lots better!). Try keeping 32 psi on the F1's. Adjust your revs according to the track conditions for the launch, and be very precise with that clutch slippage. After learning the process, I've slammed a bunch of mods on the car, and I'm gonna have to learn the launch (what little the F1's will give now) all over again, till drag radials, then some more learnin to do! It's all about patience and practice. Don't get frustrated. Have fun, and when that car hooks up off the line and you come out screamin' like a bat outta hell, there is no other feeling like it!
Ps. Try Lou's Short Stick!

seems like your MPH is high for such a slow ET, am i right there? i'm use to looking at truck ETs, but seems like most of the guys with trucks that have run in the 12s like a 12.33@104 or something like that. so your MPH is where it should be but your ET is suffering from bad traction.
