Default Cage install in Progress

Well,
The cage install is progressing!

On friday night, I finally pulled the dash out of the car and started tearing into the heater box and air bag.

On Saturday, I got the floor plates welded in place. And started fitting the front down bars.

Then yesterday I got the main hoop, the rear down bars, the front down bars the front halo bar in and the Drivers door bar all in place. I'll try and get some pictures up this evening.

I have a question for some of you technical types. It has to do with how this sentence is worded.

Unless an O.E.M. frame rail is located below and outside of driver's legs (i.e. '55 Chevy, '65 Corvette, etc.) a rocker or sill bar, minimum 1 5/8-inch (41.2 mm) x .083 (2.1 mm) CM or .118 (3.0 mm) MS or 2-inch x 2-inch x .058-inch (50.8 x 50.8 x 1.5 mm) CM or MS rectangular, is mandatory in any car with a modified floor or rocker box within the roll cage uprights (excluding six square feet of transmission maintenance opening).
If you take out the () and Commas, it reads, Unless an OEM frame rail is located below and outside of the drivers legs a rocker or sill bar is mandatory in any car with a modified floor or rocker box within the roll cage uprights.

In my case my floor is unmodified and my rocker box is outside of my uprights... So am I legal without the sill bar?

You do not need a sill bar to get an NHRA 8.50 tag with stock floors and rockers.

I believe its needed for an IHRA sportsman cage cert though, at least thats what an IHRA tech guy told me but I dont have a rulebook to confirm that..

Thats what I was told also.

It looks like I will not run one so I can keep the stock seat belt for insurance reasons (will still have a harness)

The cage is a kit by Art Morrison. I had the windshield pulled to make it easier for the install. I'm glad I did, it only cost me $55 to do it.

If you tack in the main hoop, then install the front bars and windshield bar, you can break the tacks on the main hoop and tilt it back and weld the rest up so you don't have to remove the windshield.

Then you weld in the door bars and behind the seat bars.

Just a suggestion for people who don't want to pull the windshield.

BTW what's the ary morrison kit go for and do they have bent over the seat bars?

Keep in mind a sill bar is required if you do swing-outs.

David,

On any car requiring a roll cage that has a swing-out driver's door bar, a sill bar is required.

Do a search and you'll find the $$ and weight differences as they've been posted plenty of times.

I don't know where you are getting this info...

Last time I read thru the NHRA rulebook, sillbars are ONLY required on unibody cars IF the floorboards have been modified
