Default At what rpm do you shift your bolt-on m6s?

I'm asking this question because recently I ran a new best time shifting between 5500 and 5700 rpms. It was really out of necessity more so than by choice. My valvesprings were severely weak after 140k miles and the valves were beginning to float at high rpms.

I'm wondering if the car ran that well because of the lower shiftpoints. My previous best was 12.40@112.9 shifting between 6k and 6200.

I'm sure that short shifting with 3.42s would probably slow you down significantly but what about with 3.73s or 4.10s?

I used to shift at 6000 rpm even though my power was made at 5500-5600rpms because I still had power(not peakpower, but good power) at 6000rpms

I played around with shift points quite a bit and found that my bolt on car ran the best when I shifted at about 61-6200. It sounds kind of high, but when I was shifting at 58-5900 i was going 13.0s consistently at 109...decided to wind it out a little more and gained a tenth in ET which got me into the 12s and trapping 110-111.

I had my shiftlight on @6200 with boltons. Ran 12.50s@111 on basically 7 cylinders. Here is one of the stock pushrods I found after the cam swap. Amazingly, there was no noticeable valvetrain noise.

I see 6k+ seems to be the popular choice but has anyone tried short shifting to see what it would do?

A silly question from a silly old man. All these shift points everyone uses. Read from the Factory Gauges?

I shifted at like 5800 stock... People think the higher rpm you shift at (even if it is still making power) you're way past your torque range and ur car loses momentum. Ive seen a lot of guys run faster short shifting it. Try it out sometime, you might not feel like the car is running faster but it will most times. Stock cams don't spin to 6000, and when you shift from 5800 you will probably drop your RPMs to like 3800? that will be well in your cams power range. you'll be making more area under the curve throughout the 1/4 mile.

I think a large part of that has to do with what gear ratio you're using. I don't think shortshifting would beneficial on a car with 3.23s. With my 4.10s the power doesn't seem to fall off when shifting at 5500.

Very true... but a lot of guys as a general concensus think the higher RPM the better...
