Got a sweet heads up race coming against a 86 5.0 SC Mustang
Hey guys..my boss's cousin, has a 86 5.0 Mustang. Its basically a stock body car, full interior, stock suspension and no roll bar and its a 5 speed. His cousin claims that he spent $14,000 on the motor and superchanger for this 5.0 and thats it soo wicked etc.
He is claiming that this car is so insane that he smokes the tires in all the gears, I said of course because he is still running regular radial tires He also says that with the radial rear tires that he can pull the front wheels on the street
So anyway he is claiming that his Mustang will own my SS. Now I am running 11.4x @ 120 on a bad day of racing with out even trying in 100* weather and with a 1.7x 60'. I've still got some tuning and a little bit more work to do on my car, but I know 10.9x's is with in grasp, on motor only.
Anyway I've been talking **** with this guy for a couple days, but I have been playing it cool because this is going to turn into a decent heads up money race very soon.
Just out of curiosity.. Any of you ex 5.0 Mustangs guys out there know what a stock 86 with a built up motor and super charger will run in the 1/4?
If he running lets say 12's I wanna talk **** and tell him that I will beat him X car lengths, just to add some more fuel the fire. This guy has no idea what my car run, he only sees it as a 02 Camaro SS.
What do you guys think.
Lee

One of the most Important things is what tires he will be racing you on. Not only will that tell you what kind of power he COULD be making, it will let you know if you can get the wholeshot. If He is making over 450hp you should be more than fine if he is on nitto's, Bfg's could be a different story. I have a buddy that went 11.6x@125 on 17in. nitto's with a crappy 60' he made 475rwhp. He does however have a cobra intake and heads. That may also be an informative tool find out what kind of heads and intake he has, that will give you a good idea of how serious his car is. If he has stock heads and intake he is most likely around 400hp with 8lb of boost (est. with a vortech s-trim). Find out more info!

Im with n2o Get a look at the guys tires. Not only that, check and see how many lugs he's got in the back. If he's still runnin 4lug he's probably never ran any serious tire.If he has a 4 lug rear,I'd go for it. Any serious Mustang racer would have swapped out for better axles by now.

I would say if he has $14,000 under the hood, he will probably be on some pretty respectable tires as well. Just my $.02. I'll be pulling for ya. I love love seeing those ponies gettin smoked Good Luck to ya man! Let us know what the outcome is.

Re: Got a sweet heads up race coming against a 86 5.0 SC Mustang
Well I spoke to him today about racing this Saturday. I am points racing Saturday night but they have open track times from 2pm to 4pm.
He said it was his kid's bday this weekend and wants to do it in another weekend. Anyway we kept going back and forth and have settle to run heads up for $500.
This guy keep saying that there is no way my stock cube 346 with no power adder is going to beat his supercharged 5.0 Man he is giving me no respect. I am pretty confident I will beat him, I have raced similar 5.0's and they are only dipping into the 11s I am knocking on the 10's right now.
I will keep yall updated and will definately have someone video the race.

I don't mean to scare you here, but it could be a GOOD race. We've got a local guy that's got a stock 302 shortblock with heads, cam, and a D1, and he's run in the high 6's in the 1/8, trapping around 100mph. I believe his suspension is pretty much stock, and he was running on Nitto's. I would guess his raceweight at around 3500lbs or so (stereo system, NO weight reduction, and he's a big guy).
He's never run the 1/4 due to some fuel issues up top, but his car moves... GOOD LUCK, and let us know how it turns out!

FYI, you can upgrade the axles and still have 4lug pattern.
My 89GT runs 10.0's on 28" slicks with the 4 lug pattern

You might be getting set up to lose real hard,If he has that amount of money into the car hes probable pretty fast, Just for some info I used to have a 88Gt(dont Laugh)It had a small comp cam just a factory explorer intake, stock heads, and a paxton sn93 blower 7LB. The car was lowered for handling with 373rear and with stock tranny it would do a shitty 2.0 shorttime and then it would run 112mph running 12.50s after that with street tires. Dont under estimate that car if he has Heads, cam , intake, throttle body and some suspension with tires , you may be infor a world of hurt. Let us know how it goes curious myself.

we are all pulling for you of course, but be careful. like a couple people have said you never know what he may have.
i have a friend thats has a 5-speed car with stock cam, trick flow heads, and s-trim with about 15 lbs of boost that runs 6.4x in the 1/8. some of those things , if done right will move!

Cool, Let's see some pics and timeslips. I have never seen a car run 10.0x w/4 lugs.
I'm always interested in something new.

If the guy is not a jackass, he should hand you your *** On the other hand...I see jackass' who spend alot of money and go nowhere. Ask him what heads, cam, and more importantly...what blower he has. Stock EEC on the car..who tuned it??
If he told you he pulls the front tires on radials, he sounds like an idiot. Does he have an email....shoot it to me and I'll talk to him and tell you if he's a fool or not

It should be a good race but just for a reality check, I went 10.26 with a stock bottom end 302 with a R-trim all the way back in 96. It also went a 10.63 without the blower on a 175 shot. The car looked stock except for the rollbar and no back seat. You can do alot with a light car and boost if it hooks and is tuned properly
