Default 243s + TR220 dyno and track results

Got some dyno results today from my recent cam swap. (gear swap also from 3.23 to 3.90)

The setup is:

2001 WS6 A4
243 heads (cometic .040 gaskets)
TR220
Homemade ram air kit,
lid w/k&N,
no MAF,
FAST 90/90 tb,
EWP,
pulley,
LT headers w/ ORY,
Magnaflow catback,
YANK PT4000
stock rear w/3.90s
and tuned by the best tuner in the world.

Prior to the head/cam swap I made 358.19 rwhp locked and 343.69 rwhp unlocked ( no rpm or torque numbers). Thread here.

Now the car dynos 395.77 rwhp locked and 373.99 rwhp unlocked

I choose this setup because I bought an 07 Silverado 4.8 from a friend and he had this cam and and converter in the truck but the converter went to **** and I swapped the stock stuff back in. Also the 243s were stock on that truck and I felt like they were going to waste on a 4.8 Silverado. I also wanted a stockish sounding cam and I felt like I could tune most of the lope out of this small cam. Since it's on a 112 it is noticeable if you're in a quiet area but at the dragstrip it's undetectable. I may at some point get a custom that is a little bigger but with smoother idle characteristics.

Before the heads, cam and gear swap I had ran a best of:

1.574 - 60'
4.696 - 330'
7.363 - 1/8
93.63 - MPH (was 2 mph higher on this pass than any other??, normally I ran high 91)
9.688 - 1000'
11.659 - 1/4
113.91 - MPH
(58 degrees, 331' DA)

After my heads and cam swap, my first 1/4 pass was stalling about 2000 rpm, it felt like it turned the tires over a round or two. And even though it was my best 60' it didn't feel as good as others I've had.

That run was:

1.507 - 60'
4.537 - 330'
7.133 - 1/8
94.58 - MPH
9.380 - 1000'
11.285 - 1/4
117.96 - MPH

I pushed it 2500rpm but it would fry the tires every time. The track was shitty so I may be able to get a little more out of it with some decent track prep and the air wasn't as cold as I thought it was going to be.

Raceweight is around 3600lbs. DA was ~500'

And just to eliminate the gear factor in the runs I ran over the summer when I swapped my gears and there was virtually no difference in the 1/8 between the 3.23s and the 3.90s.

That's impressive!! Your combo is simple and working great!

Who's your tuner. I would like to get a Speed Density tune.

Thanks. It could be a little more simple and still run good but too late for that now.

I'm the tuner.

Whitout gear are you running stock suspension ? did you touch your 243 before instalation (porting)?

I have a tunnel mount torque arm, LCAs, relocation brackets, and a panhard rod. After how shitty the track was last Saturday I'm really considering getting some shocks to help me hook a little better when the track prep isn't that great.

Didn't touch the heads. I wanted to get the car ready for last weekend so I didn't have time. Otherwise my buddy has been honing his porting skills on the flow bench so I'm sure I could have gained a little there, but, oh well.

I didn't really know what to expect out of this setup, but it's not bad so far. I think it will go a little quicker on good track prep, leaving a little harder. I also want to try a few things with my exhaust. I currently have a shitty y-pipe and 2 1/4" tailpipes.

Since I'm not exactly pleased with the sound of the car (not stealthy enough) I'm probably going to go with a custom cam that maybe a little bigger but with a wider LSA. I'd like to be able to run 6s/10s year round while looking and sounding as stock as possible.

WOW !!!! that thinner gasket must have the compression around the 10.7 : 1
range and the small cam is really gettin it done. If you clean the heads up &
mill them a tad to get 11 to 1 you could get another 6-8 degrees of cam
timing with the wider lsa you mentioned to sound as smooth as right now.
Good luck on the path to tens.

Awesome numbers! Goes to show that it's the combination that matters, not a big cam.

Super impressive numbers for what's done to the car, very well put together. One quick question for you though, was swapping the 3.23's over to the 3.90's actually worth it to you?

It's around 10.9:1 best I could figure it.

I swapped the gears for a couple of reasons. First off I wanted to lessen the effect of the stall during regular driving. It wasn't bad with the 3.23s but a little less never hurt anyone. Second reason was that my rear has 140k+ miles on it and it was making some noise.

Based on doing a 3.23 to 4.10 swap in the truck that I have now. I knew that the driveability would be more like stock with a big stall and I wasn't expecting any ET gain from it, as the truck (which really needed the gear) hadn't gained any from the swap. So if it did gain some ET that would just be a bonus.

During the summer when I swapped the gears (before the heads/cam) I ran a
1.605 - 60'
4.809 - 330'
7.545 - 1/8

I went back the next week, made one pass which spun and was all in the limiter on the shifts. Then made another pass and wheel hopped out of my burnout and broke some teeth off of the worm gears in my diff.

Limped home, stuck another diff in and went back the next week and ran.

1.600 - 60'
4.799 - 330'
7.575 - 1/8 (hit the limiter going to third)

So there may have been a slight gain but it could have just been a better pass.

The 3.90s workout about perfect with my setup though, I'm coming through the traps right about 6500 in third. I may have to turn it pretty good if I find any more MPH.

Good Job!! Proves that you don't have to spend big bucks or go with big names to run good et's. Nice combo, good times, good driving..

Don't forget the 10K dyno he has re-built after each modification he does to the car. That's good for 15rwhp right there, or so I've heard.

Car is running great now Jon. I think you'll find that if you get some adjustable shocks on there, that it will make a big difference in what your able to do with it out the hole on a less than optimal track. Then when the track is really good you can throw the sink at it and it will soak it up like a sponge.

Time for a stealthy dry kit in a 100hp flavor

Something like a 228/228 113-114 lsa or even a 230/230 on a 114 would give some nice gains over what you have now. Don't know how stealthy it would be though.

I know that I need some shocks. All the times that I've ran a best it was always spinning every other pass. I always wonder if it would have ran better hooking all of those other passes.

And I'm going for stealthy. I'm sure I could run a big cam, cut my exhaust off, lighter wheels, etc... But that's not what I want from this car. Maybe my next car.
