Default Turbo 5.4L with LS3 heads, 16 psi, 992hp/798tq video

Dyno'd my turbo 332" LS again. I built it for my Camaro, I will be running a Tranzilla T56 behind it. I machined and assembled the engine, Nate at One-Guys-Garage did the Turbo kit.

In a previous dyno session it made 1092hp/750ft lbs, both @ 7600 RPM, a wastegate issue caused the boost to creep from 10psi to 20psi at the end of the run, so the midrange numbers were kind of skewed. This time it held 16psi throughout the run, and made some solid numbers. Ran out of time once again to turn it up any more, plan on running around 22psi in the car! Naturally aspirated, the engine made 500hp/430ft lbs. So I am seeing around 31HP per PSI of boost. Running on E70 winter blend fuel for this pull, will be on E85 in the summer.

Engine specs:
Destroked 6.0L = 5.4L, 332 cubic inch
9.6:1 Compression
LS3 Heads, ported by myself
LS3 intake
6.0L LQ9 block .020" over
4.8L 3.276" crank with an LME billet 24x reluctor wheel
Callies Compstar H beam SBC 6.300" rods
Diamond 4.020" -4cc pistons
Comp 239/243 .623/.623 116+4 cam
Morel link bar lifters
PRC EHT springs
3/8" 7.350 pushrods

Turbo kit:
Precision PT8847 .96 a/r T4
GM manifolds
4" downpipe
CX Racing intercooler
RPS 50mm BOV
Precision 46mm WG (too small for less than 15psi)

Thanks for the update, Jakson! I remember your thread when you dyno'ed NA. This little monster is making awesome power now. I'm loving your large bore/short stroke setup...

Jakson - Have you considered starting a build thread in the FI section? I looked briefly and didn't see one. I want to subscribe as you install this engine in your '98 SS...

Nice results! I'm a fan of big bore/short stroke LS engines, though few and far between.

Keep us posted man!

Yep, there is a thread going, check the link in my sig. Hope to make some good progress on the car soon, just have a few parts left to buy. Tax return will help!

Thanks though, can't wait to get it running now! Also me and Nate just decided to throw another 46mm precision waste gate on, it will control boost now!

Wow... Super impressive. My favorite type of build big bore small stroke. Did you use a stock 4.8 gm crank?

^Same question as bowtie guy regarding the crank. I have also toyed with this idea if i can get my hands on a 6.0 block. Hurry and get that engine in the car and on a chassis dyno to see what it makes. Im excited now. Cant believe i didnt follow your build thread.

He did use the 4.8L crank at 3.276"...

Can't wait to see what this little monster makes at the rear tires.

Other than lack of CI, what are the downfalls to big bore, short stroke?

Weird I was just browsing the Car Craft I got today and was last looking at the L33 turbo Nova owned by Nate Shaw at One Guy's Garage.

Looks like they have a great track record and you're combo continues to prove it. Nice set up.

Yep, stock GM 4.8L crank. Plenty of people are making 1000+ on stock standard stroke LS cranks, so I have no worries with this one. Another thing to note with the shorter crank, the rod throws are shorter, therefore there is more crank overlap. Overlap is portion of the crank where the rod journals and main journals intersect. So in theory the 4.8 crank should be even stronger than the standard 3.622 cranks!

I can't think of any! Slightly less torque output and higher peak HP/TQ RPM, if you want to consider them downfalls. Less torque isn't bad at all for me, that's just a form of traction control, and I don't plan on pulling trailers. 800ft lbs is plenty of torque for this little engine!

Positives:
Less piston speed, easier on the rotating assembly.

Less piston travel, less wear on rings/bores.

The piston doesn't pull out of the bottom of the bores, easier on the piston, better ring seal, and longevity.

More crank overlap, stronger cranks.

Larger valves/better heads with the larger bore.

Overall a more efficient setup for power output, for a given cubic inch.

There's a reason why Nascar, and NHRA Pro Stock cars, among others, utilize a big bore/short stroke combination!

Nate is a great guy, and does excellent work! His Nova is awesome, really clean well built car! The video above is actually with the turbo kit out of his Nova, hah. He has his car all apart right now for some winter upgrades! Check out his website www.One-Guys-Garage.com
