Default UPDATE: Mamofied sbe 346 ls1 - 446rwhp to 470rwhp SAE with exhaust upgrade

Finally got my Tony Mamo spec'd H/C/I build together and got a tune...

Dyno vid:

1/4 mile run:

Very happy with how the car runs, drives, performs, sounds...seems pretty rare to see these #'s out of a 346 with a relatively small cam and runner size...

Big thanks to Tony Mamo! You guys all know that he knows his stuff, don't hesitate to get a hold of him to have him setup a beautiful combo like this one.

Next on the list to get a little more out of the setup is replacing the 3" ARH Y pipe with a 4" flowmaster merge right into a 4" cutout...
1-7/8" headers are in mind, but not sure the gains will be worth the cost of a new set of headers...
.........did this and definitely worth it to me.... except for the flowmaster merge, I ordered ARH 1-7/8" x 3" LT's and had them build me a new 3" catted Y-pipe with a 4" outlet

Also more than likely gonna throw in a MWC 9" rear with 4.11's and good driveshaft, topped off with a decent tire so I can actually launch this thing!!...S60 w/4.10 S-trac and 3.5" PST driveshaft on their way here

Open to input...

Cheers!

Nice results! Tony knows how to put together great combos! Smaller cams are very underrated.

Nice job! I've never taken my car to the track before, but watching this and some others is kind of giving me the itch. I'm in the same boat needing the MWC 9"!

Really enjoy seeing these mamo build numbers keep coming in.

OP, that's a very well done build, and congratulations on the numbers. Definitely pay attention to the exhaust. If you step up to 1-7/8" headers, I'd predict about 20 more torques. If you peak TQ at 420-425, then figure you're good for 470, assuming the rest of your exhaust supports the higher revving.

What was your race weight? Pretty much full weight car?

With a better 60 ft you are easily into the 11's. Nice job.

I think the ARH Ypipe merge is my restriction now...two 3" pipes merging into one 3" pipe just seems like a bottle neck for anything more than bolt-on mods...I think I'll try the 4" Y-merge and cutout for now and see what that gets me...Tony suggested the Kooks true dual 3" x-pipe system which should definitely suffice, but that is $$$...and I love having my stock catback when I wanna be stealth

Car is full weight and I'm 225lbs, so probably 3700-3750 raceweight??

That thing SHOULD run low 11's if not high 10's... need to learn how to lunch the car

I would LOVE to see a back to back comparison of a good y pipe with a 4" merge and cutout right past the merge compared to a kooks true dual setup. Want to know if the money is worth it.

I can show ya what a the flowmaster 4" merge will do vs the ARH 3" merge
Maybe worth another 8-10rwhp, I'd be happy with that
Kooks x-pipe system, maybe another 8-10 on top of that???
Someone on here with a H/C Trans Am I think swapped from 1-3/4" & y-pipe to Kooks 1-7/8" & dual 3" x-pipe system and picked up a lot, something like 25rwhp

I'm sure the Kooks system will maximize power, but I'd rather save that money and put it towards a good rear end, and also keep the sound I want

I'm really not sure there would be that much to gain actually. I already have 2" kooks headers with their y pipe with a 4" outlet. I don't see my picking up 10hp from the true duals. I wouldn't mind trying a custom done 3" true dual dumped before the axle. Like a Texas speed but closer together so it fits a regular tunnel mounted TA.

Not to mention the added weight.

that might be me you're thinking of. I had 1-7/8 headers into a 3" Y and 3" merge. I gained 26 jumping to kooks 3" X pipe and duals. Some of that might was also the lighter clutch. My merge was the worst possible merge though:

UPDATE: Mamofied sbe 346 ls1 - 446rwhp to 470rwhp SAE with exhaust upgrade-image-4013862756.jpg

The X also shifted my peak RPM higher by 300.

Yea that merge looks rough lol

Guy I'm thinking of actually gained 20rwhp only swapping from Kooks 1-3/4" (old design) to Kooks 1-7/8"...Kooks true duals were already installed
See thread here:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...yno-sheet.html

I'm now leaning towards stepping up to 1-7/8" primaries and flowmaster 4" merge and 4" cutout...I don't think +10-20rwhp would be unrealistic with that setup...I think my setup peaking @ 6200-6300rpm will really appreciate the extra breathing room...besides I may go bigger cubes in the future, so they'll only help

I may do the 4" merge and cutout first, throw it on the dyno, and then repeat with 1-7/8" headers, just to see what each mod gains...will post updates

Not bad at all, trap and numbers seems a tad low for a Mamo combo... That should be a 125mph setup. I agree the exhaust needs work and will wake it up for sure. Still a nice setup either way!!

Thanks!

Yea I'm very happy with the setup but still hoping to squeeze a little more power and mph out of it with some exhaust work...Pretty sure this setup wants to move a lot of air...SSRA into a 4" intake tract will take a lot in, but it's all trying to get out of a single 3" pipe

That was why I asked about race weight. Also, as even the OP has agreed, there is power left in the exhaust. The exhaust ports on these Mamo heads are the best, but the rest of the exhaust can choke them much more easily.

Even if the OP "only" gains 15 from his planned exhaust upgrades, that's a 470/420 combo. And if there is any way to talk him into a lighter clutch for another 10-15.....
