Default 4.8 2000 silverado

I have a 2000 4.8 silverado and want to make it quicker, but on a low budget, anyone out there got advice?

It depends on how much quicker you want your truck...Simple bolt ons will help but nitrous is the most horsepower for your money hands down...

You could spray a small amount with everything else stock such as a 75 shot. If you want to do some bolt ons you could do a full exhaust such as headers, y pipe, and a cat back. Like i said before though with the three things listed above, you will spend more on that and still not see the performance that you would with nitrous alone...You can also do free mods which are mods that do not cost anything. These would consist of free ram air, ported throttle body, and descreening your maf. I would ask some other truck guys if descreening ur maf throws ur tune out of wack or not, I know on F bodies most of the time it does not.

To get started... tuning, exhaust, intake, ported throttle body, electric fans, pulley

Go to the truck section and you'll find plenty of information.

how much would that cost to get a decent 6.0l and have it dropped in?
and if I did do that, could I drive around with it and not do anything else for a while or would I have to upgrade other stuff to go with it?

well a 2000 LR4 was rated at 270hp 285tq, a 2000 LQ4 was rated at 300/355. if you can find an 02+ LQ4 there rated at 325/370. an LQ4 long block depending on mileage can be had for ~1000 bucks, i priced a brand new lq4 long block with intake and oil pan back in 03 and it was around 1600 bucks. just the stock 6.0 will be a big jump up from the LR4, plus its a better foundation for mods. to me the LR4 is like a v6, sure you can make it fast but for the amount of money your spending you could of got the v8 and be just as fast with half the mods. you'd need PCM tuning with the swap but thats no big deal.

LR4 is the code name for the 4.8

LR4 = 4.8
LM7= 5.3
LQ4 = low compression 6.0
LQ9 = high compression 6.0

the only major difference between the lq4 and lq9 is the is the lq4 has dished pistions with 9.4 compression and the lq9 has flat top pistons with 10.1 CR. the LQ9 came in the top end denali and some other top end trucks and is rated at 345/380. they started in 02. most engines are the LQ4's.

shortblock is the block and rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons, and bearings), a long block is a shortblock plus heads. you can also buy a crate motor thats a long block plus intake, tb, pan, ect. personally i'd go the cheap route and just get the long block and then transfer over all your accessories (covers, pan, pushrods, lifters, ect) from you 4.8.

search around, deals can be had on ebay, the for sale section here and the truck sale sections, ect.

also do some research in the truck section and find out which options better suits you and your budget; modding or swapping. like i've already stated IMO the 6.0 swap is the better bet all around.

swapping a 6.0l in sounds like a plan, but I have no idea how to work with all this crap, probably end up getting some one to help $$$$, my friend said they cheap cuz of mpg, this my only truck so its gotta be a daily driver, and Im thinking before an engine swap , maybe new air intake system, and new exhaust sytem, I got something on it now , think its a flowmaster, not even sure really, but I watched your clip for the magnaflow, liked that, I want to have the real dual exhaust, right now it just kinda splits into two pipes at the end and come out side by side.

hey jrp, I have been looking at some 6.0l trucks, thinking maybe be wiser just to get rid of mine and look at starting over. Id prefer to have it in my truck, but I dont know how much trouble/money that would be.

My 99 silvy(4.8) runs mid 13's. Engine is stock with 150,000 on it. I only have a couple little bolt-ons. One being a procharger....

P.S. the forged 6.0 is ready and waiting for the "little guy" to die.
