Default Whats it take

Hey Guys

Whats it take to get these motors into the mid 12 range. I realize gears and stall help but i'd rather stay away from too high of a stall, but id prolly run 3.73 or 4.11's.. And lets say either based off a ls1 or a truck 6.0l.....Is it possible with stock GM heads(worked if budget allows).

This will all be going into my 78 Trans Am....Im curious about what it will take, because I have a 455 pontiac engine waiting to go in my car that will allow me to do easy 12's...And id love to get into the LSx world and the amazing potential of these engines

Thanks
Mike

a lot of it depends on the tranny you go with... i see you dont want a big stall so im assuming auto. also the weight of your car will have an effect. a full bolt on stock motor ls1 fbody with a 6spd will get up and go low 12's with good air and a decent driver. an auto will do mid 12's that auto with a 3600 stall will easily hit 12 flat or scrape into the 11's of course this is all in a car that weighs 34xx plus a driver so you will have to compare that. also a 3600 stall is very streetable especially with 3.42 gears or steeper. If you're going auto i would do 3.42's in the back coupled to a 3600 stall and a bolt on ls1, and you will see LOW 12's or high 11's with a good suspension. providing your car doesnt weigh more than an fbody..

Hey thanks for reply

Yah Id be completly content with running mid 12's as I am currently doing mid 13's with my old 400 pontiac. I will be doing it in a 78 trans am so if i do go ls1 with aluminum block i should be around 3600lb range. I currently have 3.42's and would definitly stick with them, and 3600 stall sounds right around what i was planning...I will most likely be running drag radials to which should help some

what is the typlical drivetrain power loss in these cars 20%

Ya its easy for an LS1 to hit 12s. I'm doing SS4000 and 373s and mine is gonna be a daily driver.I have seen plenty of people on here daily drive a 4000 stall..My Bolt on/Stalled/geared/weight reduction I'm shooting for 11s..

Yah goes to show how well the cylinder head design is on these engines, the ability to run so well in higher rpms is awsome for push rod v8. Its amazing how these engines seem to just keep pulling, especially for a N/A engine
