Default Melting ice on roof of house

I have a massive ice damn on the house. There's a product called Roof Melt, salt pucks you throw on the roof. Of course everyone is sold out in the area. I'll try to make my own.

I think I'll dissolve some white salt pellets in a metal bowl, then drive off the water with a torch. lol Hopefully this will make a solid puck. Has anyone got a better idea that doesn't involve ladders?

I didn't think of that. I wonder what kind of salt they are made of and if they'll damage anything. I'll google it...Thanks!

crank your heat up in the house. oil/ gas is cheap again! other than that, ive used an extension pole that has a shovel on the end of it to get ice/snow off buildings to set up a ladder to get on the roof but be prepared to run like a **** as it comes down

hook a hose to your washing machine hot water hookup and use the hot water to melt channles thru the ice to let the water out. Its the recommended way of clearing because it does no dammage to the roof surface. there are people that are using axes and picks to break up the ice, but they are mostly roofing contractors that will be more than willing to sell you a new roof in the spring when all your shingles are hacked up.

I saw some guys at a gas station the other day trying to dislodge an ice dam with a chainsaw. I do not recommend this method.

I think water softener salt is 99.9% salt. I dont think it will hurt anything.
