Default Central PA, My transmission just blew up

I was driving home from work on Rt. 72 and i heard this loud clunk, at first i thought i ran over a large block of ice or something but everytime i hit the gas it sounded like the gears were winding up or something but not really responding well. I pulled into the Hess station and parked it. Since i was only like 2 miles away from home i tried to start it up (which it did fine) and put it in reverse.

When i put it in reverse, it got really loud and made lots of noise. The speedometer shot up to like 30-40mph and it wouldn't go anywhere when i gave it a little gas. Car responds normal when in neutral and also in drive when i dont touch the gas. I cant back the car out of the parking spot so i gotta call for a tow.

Pretty sure its a tranny problem now i jsut dont know what to do. Money is already tight as it is and i dont know if i can afford a new transmission. Any suggestions?

Well, is this your DD? If not, save up for a rebuild or find a rebuilt trans and swap it in.

If it is your DD, I would look at buying a beater. Some POS for like $500-800. Then, save up for a trans rebuild.

I'm not really sure offhand. You could probably get some quotes from a few sponsors on here as well. You may also want to check the Auto Transmissions subforum on here.

Best of luck!

take into performance transmission right off 72 by the mercedez dealership. Ron edwards is his name. should be somewhere around 1200-1500 bucks. fully rebuilt with new electronics.

I'd say look for a used one like some people mentioned (at least for now to get it drivable on the cheap). If you end up doing a rebuild, talk to Diabloformula on here, he's in Leola and might be able to assist or at least guide you in the right direction.

thanks for all the responses guys, i sent some PMs -- right now i def want to get it driveable for cheap b/c its simply not possible for me to spend 1500-2000 on a trans rebuild

I have it at a trans shop by my work so i am waiting for him to take a look at it and let me know what the story is

Off topic, but why do all of you Lancaster/York/Harrisburg people refer to that area as Central PA? Central PA is State College. You're in South East.

Just something I've always wondered...

I try not to use that description myself, because it is indeed not geographically accurate - we are south-eastern PA is anything. I think it may be more of a population density thing, meaning more people reside in the Lancaster/York/Harrisburg/Reading area compared to other "geologically central" locales which may be more rural or open. Just a thought, don't know if there is any truth to that.
