Anyone have experience with Radar detectors / highway speed traps?
First of all, I have an Escort Passport 9500i, and I drive I290 and I495 in MA almost every day. I'll rarely, if ever, catch X/K/Ka band and NEVER laser on the highway even when I pass through a trap with 2-3 cops sitting under the bridge on 290 eastbound where they always are. Often one of the cops will be standing outside his car with his door open gunning people with what I assume to be laser. I never get any hits on these traps, and they are obviously using some radar technique. I have even had the car right in front of me in the left lane pulled over, with no detection.
Anyone have any insight/ideas?
My detector works great for everything except this and has saved me numerous times. Also, please take your criticism elsewhere. I speed relatively safely and not excessively.

i drive that same route frequently and know exactly where ur talking about right past that bridge on 290..... mine has picked up KA there a few times... u might wanna look into a new radar detector or at least have that one looked at. i also pick up X a lot when going onto 495 and coming off of 495 at the 290 exit.
495 u dont need to worry hardly ever any cops on there... mass pike and 290 is where u got to worry

Most traffic radar is K or Ka band, X is very rarely used for that purpose anymore. Also laser is most frequently used inside metro areas where accuracy of target is very important.
I have never heard a bad review of a Valentine One detector.

I'm wondering if it is laser and it is not picking it up since they probably are not directly hitting me. I'm pretty sure my detector is working well, since 99% of the time I detect K or Ka I see the cop shortly after. Maybe I'll have to get a valentine one and compare them.
If anyone has a valentine one I'd love to hear some personal experience with highway speed traps!

Oh and the X band you are picking up at the junction there is probably the hockey rinks that are physically right thru the woods by my house.

A buddy of mine just got a new passport and travels to NY frequently. Hes been through all kinds of radar traps and state troopers with great success. Another buddy of mine has a valentine one and swears by it. I had a hard wired Belltronics detector that was great also. Its all preference i guess, you'll get caught eventually, just the way it is.

Your detector more than likely won't pick up the laser. Like you stated before the cop has to hit you directly with it and it has to basically hit the detector to read it.
I've gone through the same stuff with my Valentine. It's very rare that it'll pick up the laser. I'm guessing as of late, the cops realize that if they use a smaller beam they get less bounce around. A while back I did get alot of laser feedback, but in the past monht I get very minimal detection.
Don't bother getting a valentine one unless you want to upgrade. I bought the V1 only because it tells you what direction the radar is comming from, which makes it MUCH easier to determine if it's a fasle read or real since you can look in that direction.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll accept the answer as being them not directly hitting me with laser... I guess that's a good thing.
For the record, I love my passport 9500i, especially the GPS feature that allows me to lockout false alerts along my regular commutes. This way I know ANY noise the thing makes, is a cop (or sometimes a construction sign).
Cheers.
