Default heat is killing my car ?

so it is 91 degrees here right now, and here's what I noticed:

wife and I got into the T/A and went for a drive
We went on 17N cruising at 65 mph (cruise set), windows up, A/C turned on.
the car got to its normal operating temp (210 degrees) sat there for around 5 mins, then started climing up.

It got to the 3rd marker of the gauge (i dunno what temp that is) and wanted to go further... we turned off the A/C and brought the windows down - the temps started climbing back down and got back to 210 degrees within a couple of minutes.

wtf?

Another weird thing is, is that even with the A/C off it just didn't feel right. As I said, we were on cruise but the RPMs were anything but steady. They kept going up ~200RPMs and going down.. very fast. Up 200 RPMs then in a second back down, up and down.. what the ****..

As an experiment I put the tranny in 3 (we were in D), RPMs went up real fast to ~2500 at 65mph (as expected) but werent steady there either. Same as in D - went up ~200 RPMs and went down within a second. And just kept doing that.

I'm confused....

My car does the ac thing every now and then. Its normal for a car's temp to go up when your a/c is working (if its standing stil and not moving, once it starts to move, the temp should go quickly down.). NOw I had the same problem with the rpms. It urned out to be as weird as this may sound the coolant temp sensor harness connections (pins) they werent making good contact with the sensor. Hope this helps

The gauge on any fbody besides the 98 is really only a dummy gauge. As long is it did not get into the red it might not be a big deal. Mine sometimes will get to the 3/4 mark and sit there when it is really hot. I wouldn't panic yet. Get it heated up again and then listen for any hissing. If the system is losing pressure it could cause the temp to rise but more than likely it's probably just the crap gauge

Buy yourself a real temp gauge (think autometer).

My guess is thats bad. My car with major mods runs cool all day. I did PT with the air on. I have a 6spd and maybe your tranny cooler is putting more heat in the motor?

tranny cooler's independant from everything (not hooked up to the radiator)

plus, what about the other problem?

RPMs going up and down by themselves with no change in load..

my temp went up too with the ac on only though....it was 97 here today....i turned it off and it went stable again....driving on the highway however it was stable...then again my car isnt stock but when i was at a gas station with the car idling and ac running oil pressure was about 25-30# and the car temp was climbing slowly....confused me too so i just shut off the ac and leave the ttops off. Still hot as hell though, ill try checking the pins on the sensor

Overheating could just be a stuck/bad thermostat.
