When the signal from the sender is lost the gauge stays on full up because resistance is infinite. Check your connectors and wires first.

Here's some more help if you need it:

Today I filled up the gas tank to the point where gas poured out ,I hoped it would free up the float & still no dice.I'll re-check the connections and wires tomorrow ...

Is there a fuse or relay that controls the needle?

There is a fuse for your instruments but I think it is for the lights in the instruments only - you can see it in the fuse block. The way most gauges work with senders is to supply a small current to the circuit between the gauge and the sensor, sometimes only 5v and then add resistance to lower or "meter" changes from the max signal voltage. As the sender in the tank is moved with a higher level of fuel, more resistance is added, less voltage is in the circuit and the gauge reads higher. That is why disconnecting the wire altogether pegs the gauge to full up. Logically that seems backwards but with the fuel gauge apparently lower is higher.

I called a friend and he said there was a rubber peice that I was supposed to take off the old pump for the float. The dealer said it was a direct drop in.
