Default Thinking of going 4L80

Well I been thinking of going with a 4L80 for awhile now, and i think it would be a good idea. It would allow me to go racing more and not worry about breaking like i do when i race with the M6 or i should say the lack of racing i have not done due to worring about breaking....

anyone gone from M6 to a auto and regretted it???
my car is not a race car but a nice street car so th400 is not a consideration

anyone know what parts i need for a swap????

opinions wanted

I did the M6 to TH350 swap and have not regretted it at all. I do more racing with my car so it doesn't bother me that it is only a 3 speed now but love the auto because it is so consistent now.

Chef this is something that I've been trying to get you to do or a year and a half now, and moreso after the last "event" your car saw.

It is THE perfect solution to your problems/concerns. A built 4l80 with a manual valve body will be fun, and tolerable on the street.

Good thing you still have that other center section with the 3.70's still LOL. That's the only thing I can see you possibly wanting to do, is put that back in the car. Not impossible, can be done without too much of a headache.

A 4l80is what mightymouse has in his car, and look @ what he's run since getting away from the stick. No way that car was going anywhere near 9.0 with a stick in it, nevermind on a 17 inch rim, now that car's impressive as hell, and doesn't break. I'm not saying this is your ticket to 9 second runs, but it will certainly make for a racable car that youc an drive and not break stuff, hell if he can get his 3700 lb car to trap over 150 that's got to be about 1000 hp to do that, at your power level that tranny with a little maintenance will never give you a problem, and you couls double your power level, and still have zero problems.

Do it... of all the mods you've done this will be the one that will put THE biggest smile on your face when you pull up to the timeslip booth, and you'll still be wearing that smile for days as you're driving all over creation with that car like you've done since the day you picked it up. (sans the last 5 months)

Kenny--thanks i will be reading that info for sure

JL- Yea the last track trip wasnt a big deal and it was a simple fix, taking the bumper off to get painted was the creation of the mess... but its painted now (last night) and will be on this weekend...I got someone coming for some old race parts i have had squirrled away for years and if they sell the 4l80 swap will be a REAL possibility soon...

Chef I think the next time around myself I will go with a 4l80E too. Last time I was looking, a built 4l80E and all the conversion parts you need are like $4,000+. Then you have to make it work.

I simply want it for peace of mind when more power is added and I don't want too loose 3rd gear and lockup, same as you.

If I can find a good deal on a tranny I might just buy it and hold it till I wanna do the swap, then I'll give it all to Don

The manual valve body is of personal preference, but honestly if you have a good tune I think you will be faster letting it do it's things vs shifting it. No doubt it's fun, but if your hunting for number's I'd think about it.

Actually FLT sells a nice 4l80E and it's costs almost the same as their 4l60E! Damn if they had that deal a year or so ago I would of went that route.

http://finishlinetrans.com/store/pro...products_id=33

Even a stock 4l80E with new clutches will take a massive beating.

Manual valve body will make it alot more fun though, and you can adjust shift points to track conditions easy enough. Plus chef's got a kit on his car, shift points n/a vs on the jug will be different, easier to just pull the lever at a different rpm then be changing the tune via laptop from oen run to the next.

Good point about the bottle, It's a tough call, plus for some reason the MVB's on the 4l80E's are like and extra $500. It will make your tuning life easier.

MightyMouse mentioned earlier runs an automatic valve body, w/ this gate shifter and he's got a brake on it. I'm guessing it's vacume modulated atleast but if it works for his car I'm sure it would work for mine.

I got a MVB in my 4l60E once by accident granted it's not vac modulated but it did not shift like I thought it would. I would probably go with what the tranny builder/tuner recommends.

Maybe Don or somebody could chime in about shift points on n20, maybe their is a solution we are unaware of?

I know nitrous likes to be shifter earlier, usually will go faster that way as well because you're using more of the tq that you get with nitrous as well.

Yup, it's based on speed and rpm and can be a real PIA.
Just a converter swap will F it up for the reason you mentioned.

That's another thing, every converter is a little different and may require something else as well.

Manual valve body, much easier. Plus it's more fun

The manual valve body gets old, but shifting a stock doesn't

Hughes makes a built 4L80E, I explored it for my Cobra (yes- it bolts up fine!) and I just haven't had a chance to call Hughes.

You guys have a hook in Hughes.. let us know what they say.
