Default Cam Swap Complete! Big Thanks to 1meantransam, SidewayzOz and elcaminokid!

Got the F13 cam, springs, underdrive pulley and Katech tensioner all installed last night.

BIG BIG BIG thanks to 1meanstransam, SidewayzOz and elcaminokid. I am very lucky to have such nice friends nearby!

Biggest lessons learned:
- DO NOT take out two springs then start turning the crank before putting new springs on! We got very lucky here.
- The stock crank seal on the timing cover is metal. Knock the whole thing out, don't just scrape of the rubber gasket part.
- The oil pump pick up tube bolt is the scariest thing in the world. I think we should've dropped the oil pan more, but somehow I willed it in there.
- 1/4" metal dow rods from the hardware store work great for holding up the lifters. Slide in real easy.

I'm sure there are some more good lessons learned. 1meanstransam & SidewayzOz feel free to chime in.

Now off to Mike Norris to get the Yank SS3600/cooler installed and it all tuned.

Here's a startup video...

And here's some pictures...

Sounds nasty man!
What are the specs?
Sounds like some nice separation.
How hard was it to get those rods in there for the lifters?
How long were they?
Just wondering about room between the front end and the block.
I'll be doing a cam hopefully by year end and I just recently noticed that trick.

Thanks. 230"/232" .595"/.585" 114LSA. The F13 is a real proven cam on here.

The dow rods are pretty easy to put in. We did have to remove the plastic shroud from the engineside of the AC condensor. 22" should be perfect. We picked one up at ACE, but I'm sure you can find them at any hardware store. 1/4" slid in real easy.

Cool. I'm so glad I finally did it. I'm no expert, but let me know if you have any questions.

Nobody would ever do that... I blame the tears in my eyes from laughing about Street Racing Jason.

So you tackled a cam swap but you don't want to do the converter yourself? How come? Congrats on completing the install man.

Good question Mike. I dont know really. I guess lack of experience, assume its a PITA to drop the tranny, my Y-pipe is welded on and I'm expecting that might be a pain. Also, not sure what it would be like to drive 70 miles to Mike Norris with an untuned cam and 3600 stall. Sorta just choosing my battles ya know. Did you install your converter?

Sounds good. Feels good once its all done. Did you modify your exhaust tips so they tuck closer to the bumper? I have the same exhaust and it seems to hand too low.

I bought the car 4 years ago with the Borla on it, so I'm not sure. Probably just the way it was installed.

We tried driving a 98SS with a f13 untuned, and holy cow no. Thank god I have HPTuners and 98's unlocked. We just threw another tune in from a similar cam, and it drove good. Norris actually did not have to do a lot to get it right. Used that same tune on another cam, and again drove pretty good. But, it is $100 for every non-98 car I have to unlock. That is what stinks.

If you every have to do that oil pickup again, just use some safety wire around it taking it out and installing, and no worries.

Good job! Cam and headers only 98 made 365hp on Norris dyno....

I've driven it untuned probably 50 miles, and I'm going to have to drive 70 miles over to Mike's. It really hasnt been that bad.

My buddies have HPTuners, but Mike's going to drop in the converter too, and its time for a professional tune.

I have to say I'm hoping for a little more than 365 considering it made 350 before the cam (untuned).

Great install. How did you get the cam out with the A/C condenser in the way? Or did you just move it as you were pulling it out of the way.
