Default Can someone tell me what this is?

I'm from Chicago but I've been doing some work at the Crystal River nuclear plant north of Tampa. We installed a meteorological monitoring tower right on the gulf. One day as I walked near the shore I came across this. Google is failing me, it can't be a turtle I don't think since the shell is sectioned like that. What the hell is this creepy thing? I wanted to flip it over to see what was under there but I was being too much of a chicken ****. It was about 30-36 inches long.

Ahhhh I didn't even suspect this thing to be a crab. Saw a few other normal looking crabs right near it too. Thanks guys.

LoL, that's a Horseshoe Crab my friend. Fairly common saltwater critter around Florida that you'll occasionally see on the beaches.

yup, horseshoe crab... Useless fact of the day - their blood looks dark blue when it comes in contact with the air. Their blood is used for medical research for some of its attributes. kinda weird/neat.
