Default How's Florida?

well guys, I'm thinking about moving down to Florida. Start fresh. My question is how much money do you think I need to have to survive? I do have a friend that might come with me and we'd be rooming together. Between the two of us, how much money do you really need to get by? Is finding a job in FL tough? Thanks for any help.

I was thinking the miami/ft lauderdale area. I'm moving because it has a better music scene (I'm a musician) but I'm also a smart kid. I was at one of the country's best engineering schools. So I'd most likely move there, work for a while, and then pick up with school later on once I'm settled. As for skills, well I don't have any degrees and I'm not a tradesman so all I really have is intelligence. So I could work at a bank? Something on those lines?

Your best bet is go to TC Palm on line and research the Houseing and Job market.Craigslist also can help u out so u get a idea of what it cost for a place and what jobs are out there.

Hope you know Spanish.

All the usual jobs are available for people with little to no experience or training. They just don't pay as much. The construction industry is virtually at a standstill. I don't even think Disney is hiring right now.

Miami/Ft. Laud is expensive. I've lived there most of my life. Things have changed so much. Yes, Spanish is an issue. I got tired of most people there and the attitudes. Money is king there. Most decent places will run 1k+ a month. So you need to make at least 12-15hr just to make it. Start with a temp agency if you have some skills.

For me, I moved my Family to Orlando and saved money and got more for my dollar. I work remotely, so where I live I make my living.

Good luck

Another +1 for jobs not paying much. Im in the Panhandle and even in the auto repair industry pay has become poor. All the mills and plants in the area have laid off hundreds in the last few years and have not rehired.

I moved down there in 2003 and had a run of $12/hr and $14/hr jobs and then quit a $14/hr job that probably would have lasted a long time (well maybe not now since it was in the mtg industry) and then quit to take a $18/hr job that i ended up getting let go from within 7 weeks. After that i moved out of S.FL in the summer of 2005 because during the time i was down there i never made more than ~ $27k before taxes in a single year and was paying $625-$870 a month in rent and the $625 place was the epitome of ghetto. go look up the march 2004 margate cross creek apartment fire and you'll know what i'm talking about. i'm glad i moved out of there before the security guard shot the place up and burned one of the buildings down.

It's not easy to survive down there if you're just an average joe making <$30k a year.

Just look up demographics and that will give you a better idea vs just opinions.

Depending on your skin color.. you might love or hate the following areas
  • Margate
  • Miramar
  • Pembroke Pines
  • Liberty City
  • Carol City
  • Overtown
  • Miami Gardens
  • North Miami
  • Cutler Rich
  • Sunrise

Some of the nicer areas?
  • Coral Gables
  • Brickell
  • Weston
  • Southwest Ranches
  • Pinecrest
  • West Miami
  • Kendall

Hmm, if you are into the country bars, and red neck stuff
  • Davie

Jobs and Salaries?
  • It's all relative.. I certainly wouldn't move down here without a job offer in hand.

Does that mean you have a degree or just a high school diploma? I was at UM, but just for a seminar.. doesn't mean my undergrad, or grad degrees are from UM, lol...

I hope you like really hot and humid weather for 4-5 months a year! Now that I am in PA on vacation, I'm really thinking of moving back North!

Corey I think you went up to Pa. to avoid a ride in my 1000hp beast. I am starting over and have a stock 600horse car. Are you ready or do you intend to stay in Yankeeland?

The Thursday night cruise is growing like a weed out of control.

Yo BoBo how are you old friend?
